James made his first class debut for a County Select XI against the Indians at the Emirates Riverside in July 2021.
Somerset List ‘A’ debut August 2021.

James made his Somerset first class debut in July 2022 and he was an instant success scoring his maiden half century in his first match and he followed it up with his maiden century in the next game against Essex at Chelmsford.
James then enjoyed a successful Royal London Cup campaign being the highest run scorer (307) which included his maiden one-day century.
As a result of his successful breakthrough season James received Somerset’s Young Player of the Year Award for 2022.
James had outstanding seasons in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, at 19, he became Somerset’s youngest first-class double centurion, amassing 1,086 runs in 14 County Championship matches, including five centuries, making him Division One’s third-highest run-scorer.
His exceptional performance earned him the Professional Cricketers’ Association Men’s Young Player of the Year award. In October 2023, Rew then extended his contract with Somerset until 2026.
Continuing his form into 2024, he scored 726 runs in 14 first-class matches, with two centuries and three fifties, maintaining an average of 36.30. His consistent performances led to his selection for the England Lions squad touring Australia in early 2025.
