Three for Jack on day two
Jack Leach claimed three wickets, but Durham fought back bravely on the second day of this Vitality County Championship Division One clash at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
Looking to build on their overnight total of 395 for six, Somerset wasted no time in securing a fourth batting point as the five required runs came in the opening over of the day.
Maximum batting points were very much in Somerset’s sights as James Rew reached his century from 112 balls, but fell for 103 just two balls later, edging Brydon Carse to Ashton Turner at slip.
Lewis Gregory and Kasey Aldridge ensured a fifth bonus point for their side in the 108th over, and their partnership was worth exactly 50 when Aldridge (44) went for the reverse sweep off Callum Parkinson but top edged it allowing Ollie Robinson to take a simple catch.
The score was now 467 for eight and Craig Overton made a rapid 19 from 15 balls before he attempted to put George Drissell into the Trescothick Pavilion. He didn’t quite get hold of it and Carse took the catch at long on at 492 for nine.
Lewis Gregory (31) then picked out Lees on the boundary in front of the Lord Botham Stand and Somerset’s innings came to an end without further addition to the total.
The Durham reply had reached 20 without loss after five overs of seam bowling that brought little in the way of chances, so the hosts turned to spin. Jack Leach began at the River End, but it was Archie Vaughan who made the breakthrough.
The 19-year-old impressed on his First Class debut with the bat on day one and completed a wicket maiden with his first over in the format. Ben McKinney was the batter to fall, trapped lbw for 15.
Four further runs were added by the visitors before lunch was taken at 29 for one.
After the break, Alex Lees and Scott Borthwick had taken their partnership to 61 and the Durham score to 86 when Leach found Borthwick’s outside edge and Craig Overton took a fine low catch.
The same combination accounted for Ollie Robinson (26) at 128 for three, and when Leach bowled Ashton Turner for six the visitors found themselves on 136 for four.
Lees and Bas de Leede survived to take Durham to tea on 150.
Their reprieve was short-lived however, as Overton claimed a stunning catch to remove Lees for 59 with the addition of just one run to the visitor’s total. Lewis Goldsworthy found the outside edge and Overton leapt low to his left to take an absolute stunner.
A suicidal single then saw de Leede run out by a combination of Abell and Rew as Durham slipped to 170 for six.
Carse and Ben Raine dug deep though and battled back for the visitors, reaching their 50-run stand from just 71 balls.
Carse went to his personal half century from 86 deliveries with Raine reaching the landmark shortly after from 94 balls and by the close of play their partnership was worth 102.
Raine survived an almighty appeal for a catch off leach in the final over but Umpire Bailey was unmoved and the visitors finished the day on 272 for six, trailing by 220.
