Three for Archie on rain-affected day two

Archie Vaughan claimed three wickets but rain curtained proceedings on the second day of this top of the table Vitality County Championship Division One clash at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.

After bowling their hosts out for 317 on the opening day, the visitors were looking to set a solid platform on which to build their reply and Dom Sibley and Rory Burns shared an opening stand of 41 to enable them to do just that.

The pair had seen off off the pace of Craig Overton and new Somerset signing Brett Randell, so the home side turned to spin. Vaughan was the bowler to make the breakthrough when he enticed Sibley (16) into a shot that picked out Tom Abell at mid-wicket.

With only seven additional runs added to the score, Vaughan struck again when he trapped Burns lbw for 21.

Ryan Patel and Ben Geddes the navigated their way through the rest of the session to leave the field at lunch with the scoreboard showing 91 for two.

In truth the Somerset attack had deserved more reward as all those utilised beat the bat on a number of occasions, but on such fine margins are championships won and lost.

After the break the Surrey pair took their side to three figures and Geddes reached his half century from 93 balls. That was as good as it got for the Surrey batter though. Three balls after reaching his landmark, Vaughan came around the wicket to change the angle and Geddes top edged high into the Taunton sky enabling Lewis Goldsworthy to take a comfortable catch.

Patel then took up the mantle and reached his 50 from 130 deliveries, and when rain arrived shortly before 3pm to force the players to take tea, Surrey had advanced to 169 for three.

Unfortunately, no further play was possible and Surrey will resume tomorrow trailing by 148 with seven wickets remaining in their first innings.
