THE OPPOSITION
WORCESTERSHIRE
Captain: Jake Libby
Overseas player: Azhar Ali (Pakistan)
2022 finish: Ninth (Group B)
2022 leading run scorer: Jake Libby (332)
2022 leading wicket taker: Dillon Pennington (10)
Key player: Jake Libby – The prolific opener in all formats of the game will be skippering the side in an official role for the first time in the 50-over competition and provides stability and a calming influence for the younger players. Last season’s leading run-scorer for the Rapids provides the solid rock around the more powerful hitters can play.
Young player to watch: Kashif Ali – The first product of SACA to sign a contract with a first-class county, Kashif showed glimpses of his talent last summer, including a brilliant century on his List A debut versus Kent. A broken thumb checked his progress but expected to make a big impact in 2023 with his wristy stroke-play.
TEAM NEWS
Somerset will be without Josh Davey (side), Kasey Aldridge (side) and Alfie Ogborne (shin).
A starting XI will be picked from the following squad: Sean Dickson, Andy Umeed, George Thomas, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Curtis Campher, George Bartlett, Danny Lamb, Josh Thomas, Ned Leonard, Jack Brooks, Shoaib Bashir and JT Langridge.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Ahead of the game, SCCC Metro Bank One Day Cup Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “I was impressed by the way that George and Lewis batted against Warwickshire. They really wrestled the momentum back after we had a tough start. The way that all the guys fought to get us back in the game was really pleasing. We talked about how important it is to show fight and passion, and I thought they did that well.
“Worcestershire is another game, and as I said at the start of the competition, we need to make sure that we’re doing the right things at the right times to ensure that we’re making the most of our 50 overs. Everyone wants to bounce back and show that we’ve got a lot more to give.”
CLASSIC MATCH
We go back to 2019 for our classic match between the two sides.
The fixture was the quarter-final of the Royal London One-Day Cup at New Road and it was a game that saw Somerset cruise into the last four courtesy of a 147-run victory.
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to field. Unfortunately for the hosts, that was as good as the day got.
112 from Tom Banton inspired the visitors to their highest total in List A cricket against Worcestershire as they compiled 337 for eight.
The home side slipped to 81 for four and wickets continued to fall regularly as Worcestershire were dismissed for 190 in 38 overs.
Azhar Ali was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, claiming five for 34.
It was a terrific result for Somerset supporters, and things got even better as Tom Abell’s side went on to lift the Royal London Cup at Lord’s.
