THE OPPOSITION

SUSSEX

Captain: Tom Haines
Overseas players: Cheteshwar Pujara (India)

2022 finish: Semi-finalists
2022 leading run scorer: Cheteshwar Pujara (624)
2022 leading wicket taker: Ari Karvelas (20)

Key player: Cheteshwar Pujara – The impact Pujara can provide shouldn’t be underestimated. Sussex were on no-one’s radar a year ago but he scored three hundreds as they topped the group and he led the side shrewdly. He returns in decent form too, having made 133 for West Zone during a brief return to India at the start of July.

Young player to watch: James Coles – Picked up nine wickets last year and his off spin has improved since while he also offers the promise of quick runs in the middle order. The 19-year-old has scored two Championship hundreds this season and the freedom with which he plays should be suited to the 50 overs format.

TEAM NEWS

Somerset will be without Josh Davey (side), Kasey Aldridge (side) and Alfie Ogborne (shin).

A starting XI will be picked from the following squad: Sean Dickson, Andy Umeed, George Thomas, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Curtis Campher, George Bartlett, Danny Lamb, Josh Thomas, Ned Leonard, Jack Brooks, Shoaib Bashir and JT Langridge.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

SCCC Metro Bank One Day Cup Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “I think we gave a good account of ourselves with the bat at Northants. It would have taken something special from someone to have gotten us over the line, but I think we can take some positives from the fact that we were able to post a good total. That’s something that we can use as we approach the game against Sussex.

“At times our fielding was not at the level that we expect. That’s disappointing but sometimes that can happen when you’re chasing the game. I’ve got a huge amount of faith in the guys and I’m sure that they’ll put things right moving forward.

“Sussex are a good side and they’ll be frustrated with their start to the comp so far and they’ll be looking to put that right against us, but we know that if we all put in our best performances, we can beat anyone.

“The crowds at the Cooper Associates County Ground for our first two games in the competition have been incredible and the lads have really appreciated the support. We can’t wait to get back out there tomorrow.”

CLASSIC MATCH

Our classic List A match between the two sides comes from 2003.

When Somerset and Sussex clashed in a 45-over National League match at Hove, it was the visitors who came out on top by 191 runs.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bat.

Make Burns made 91 at the top of the order, but it was Ian Blackwell who stole the headlines. In a brutal display of batting, he scored 111 from just 56 balls and helped himself to 13 fours and five sixes. Keith Dutch (44 from 32 balls) and Keith Parsons (40 from 40) also made valuable contributions as Somerset posted 377 for nine.

Blackwell also claimed three for 57 as Sussex were dismissed for 186 off just 30.2 overs. Keith Dutch was the pick of the attack, finishing with four for 34.

THE WURZELS

SCCC are pleased to be able to announce that the Wurzels will be performing at this match for Members and ticket holders in the Jurasic Fibre Fan Village!

The Wurzels are THE quintessential Somerset band and they will be bring you all their hits on the night, including “Blackbird”.

Join us for a day of outstanding cricket action and a night of classic Wurzels songs!

The Wurzels are due to take to the stage after the match has finished.

The fan village will be the only area of the Cooper Associates County Ground open to Members and spectators after the completion of play.

MATCH SPONSOR – WPA HEALTH INSURANCE

Today’s match sponsor, WPA Health Insurance, will be taking part in a special charity triathlon challenge.

Earlier this year, a member of staff at WPA tragically lost their daughter who was just 18 years of age. At this game, WPA are aiming to cycle, run and row for the entirety of the match at the Cooper Associates County Ground, and raise as much money as possible for Cardiac Risk in the Young UK.
