Second XI County Championship: Defeat for Somerset at Hampshire

DAY FOUR

Hampshire resumed on 10 for one on the final day of this Second XI County Championship match against Somerset at Utilita Bowl, requiring a further 283 for victory.

Jake Ball, Alfie Ogborne, Kian Roberts and Josh Thomas each claimed a wicket in the morning session to put Somerset in the ascendancy and reduce the home side to 105 for five at lunch.

However, Joe Weatherley (108) and Ben Salter (78 not out) turned the game on its head by sharing a sixth wicket stand of 150.

Salter and Andrew MacEwen then added 42 to see Hampshire to their victory target with four wickets to spare.

DAY THREE

Hampshire resumed on 321 for six on the third day of this Second XI County Championship match against Somerset at Utilita Bowl, trailing by 28 runs.

The hosts lost their final four wickets for just 34 runs to claim a first innings lead of six runs.

Somerset lost Sean Dickson early on but Bertie Michael and Josh Thomas shared a half century stand for the second wicket, taking the visitors to 66 for one at lunch.

After the break, Somerset lost two wickets in two balls as Michael (36) fell to the final ball of the 20th over, with Thomas (31) being dismissed from the opening delivery of the 21st. Their partnership had been worth 70.

Andy Umeed was dismissed without scoring but Will Smeed and Lewis Goldsworthy shared a stand of 48 for the fifth wicket before Goldsworthy was dismissed for 14 at 131 for five.

Kian Roberts was unable to repeat his first innings heroics, but Smeed (66 not out) ensured that his side reached tea at 188 for six, a lead of 182.

Smeed reached his century from 108 balls but eventually fell for 107 as Somerset posted a total of 298 all out. There were also useful contributions from Ben Church (43) and JT Langridge who hit 36 from 19 balls.

Toby Albert fell early on, caught by Andy Umeed off the bowling of Langridge, and by the close of play Hampshire were 10 for one, requiring a further 283 for victory

DAY TWO

Hampshire resumed on two without loss on the second day of this Second XI County Championship at Utilita Bowl.

Somerset claimed two early scalps as the visitors slipped to 26 for two in the 12th over but Joe Weatherley and Joseph Eckland took their side to 95 for two at lunch.

The pair batted together for the whole of the afternoon session as Hampshire reached tea on 205 for two.

The partnership was eventually worth 197 when Weatherley was caught by Sean Dickson off the bowling of James Theedom for 99 at 223 for three.

JT Langridge and Lewis Goldsworthy claimed a wicket each in the evening session to leave Hampshire five down but Eckland reached 132 before he was caught by Kian Roberts off the bowling of Alfie Ogborne.

By the close of play, the visitors had reached 321 for six, trailing by 28 runs.

DAY ONE

Hampshire won the toss and elected to field.

The Somerset opening duo of Bertie Michael and Sean Dickson shared an opening stand of 21 before the former was caught by Toby Albert off the bowling of Harry Petrie for 12.

Dickson and Josh Thomas added 55 for the second wicket before the more experienced batter was caught by Andrew Neal off the bowling of Oliver Williams for 35. Thomas (27) then fell in similar fashion to give Oli Cordery a wicket at 84 for three.

Andy Umeed and Lewis Goldsworthy brought up the Somerset 100 in the 30th over, but Goldsworthy departed for 10 just before lunch.

The hosts ended the morning session on 107 for four.

After the break, Umeed and Will Smeed took the score to 147. Smeed was the batter to fall for 17, and Umeed was then dismissed for the addition of 20 further runs to the Somerset total.

When Ben Church was out for 0, Somerset had slipped to 179 for seven. However, Kian Roberts and Alfie Ogborne brought up their team’s 200 in the 59th over and by the time tea arrived the score had moved to 228 for seven.

The eighth wicket partnership was eventually worth a superb 110.

Somerset were eventually dismissed for 349, Roberts finishing unbeaten on 121.

By the close of play, Hampshire had reached two without loss in reply.
