Somerset take on Oxfordshire at Bicester and North Oxford CC in the 50-over ECB Women’s County Competition.

Oxfordshire won by 11 runs.

Oxfordshire won the toss and elected to bat.

Genny Porter and Carla Wood shared an opening stand of 79 but both found themselves back in the pavilion courtesy of two quick wickets from Karla Rose.

However, Kirsty Dymond and Aimee Diab took the score to 161 before the former was bowled by Joleigh Roberts for for 38. Roberts then removed Lottie Oxon with her very next ball to leave the hosts four down after 30 overs.

Emilia Bartram added a rapid 30 before being trapped lbw by Nicole Harvey, who also removed Chloe Westbury at 246 for six.

Diab went on to make 90 before she was caught and bowled by Poppy Hawker as Oxfordshire finished on 298 for eight from their allotted overs. Roberts was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 33

The Somerset reply saw Rose (14) and Harvey add 31 for the first wicket before the latter and Daisy Jeanes (65 from 56 balls) put on 117 for the second to leave the visitors on 148 for two in the 29th over.

Somerset skipper, Emily Edgecombe made 54 from 41 balls before she was caught by Maya Barnwell off the bowling of Katie Waugh at 236 for three in the 41st over.

Harvey was eventually dismissed for 76 to leave Somerset on 252 for four and then Sophie Pickering fell just two balls later without further addition to the score.

Unfortunately, wickets continued to fall and Somerset fell agonisingly short of their target, finishing on 287 all out.

Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Emily Edgecombe, Nicole Harvey, Carla Rose, Daisy Jeanes, Joleigh Roberts, Sophie Pickering, Molly Thornburn, Poppy Hawker, Tilly Bond, Georgia Tulip and Lucy Ashman.

Ahead of the games, Somerset Pathway Coach & Women and Girls Lead, Kieran Peters said: “We have a lot of young players in our squad, many of whom play for the Under 18 County age group side. The Under 18s have qualified for a national knock out quarter final which is also being played on Sunday which means that several of our squad will be unavailable for selection for the game against Oxfordshire. It will therefore be a slightly different looking squad, but that creates some exciting opportunities and some different roles for those who will be involved on Sunday.

“Although we’re missing a few players, we will still be really confident in those who will take to the field. We’re looking forward to them putting on a show and showing what they can do in a Somerset shirt.

“We’ve still got a lot of familiar faces in the group with a lot of experience and this gives them the opportunity to continue to drive forward and put a stamp on how we want to play our 50-over cricket. Hopefully, we can set some high standards and come away with a positive result.”
