Heather signs Somerset contract extension

England international, Heather Knight has signed a contract extension with Somerset.

The World Cup winning captain, who has represented her country on 295 occasions, has put pen to paper on a deal until at least the end of the 2026 season.

The 34-year-old played her way through the Devon Pathway before making her debut for the county in 2005. She then represented Berkshire between 2010 and 2019. Her England debut came in 2010, and she has gone on to feature in 149 ODIs, 132 IT20s and 14 Test matches, scoring more than 7300 runs and claiming 84 wickets with her right-arm off spin.

She was named England Captain in 2016 and led her country to World Cup glory the following year. In 2018 she was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Heather captained Western Storm to two Kia Super League titles and has represented Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash, Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL and London Spirit in The Hundred.

Heather featured in six Metro Bank One Day Cup matches for Somerset this summer, scoring 244 runs at an average of 40.66 and taking four wickets with a best of three for seven.

After signing her contract, Heather said: “I’m really pleased to have extended my time with Somerset. It’s a Club that means a lot to my family and I, and I feel a huge amount of pride every time I pull on the shirt. This season has been frustrating on a personal level for me due to injury, but I’ve loved every moment of my time at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

“The first year of Tier 1 cricket has been groundbreaking and the women’s game is only going to get stronger. Somerset have always been committed to driving the Women’s game forward and I’m delighted that I’m going to be able to play a part in that again next season.”

Somerset Head Coach, Trevor Griffin said: “It’s fantastic news that Heather has extended her commitment to Somerset. She’s a hugely respected, world class player and leader who our young squad can learn so much from.

“She’s put in many match winning performances for us in the past, but her influence goes far beyond that. She’s a wonderful role model for all those wanting to carve a professional career in cricket and I’m so pleased that our squad will be able to continue to learn from her.”

SCCC Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry added: “Heather is genuinely world class both on and off the field and we are delighted that she will continue to have a positive impact on the Club and our players for at least another year.

“She is an inspiration, and we are delighted that she is committed to taking the team forward.”
