Alex Commits to Somerset

Somerset all-rounder, Alex Griffiths has signed a contract extension until at least the end of the 2028 season.

The 23-year-old from Swansea played 13 Metro Bank One Day Cup matches for Somerset last season, scoring 191 runs with a top score of 46. She also claimed nine wickets with a best of two for 20. Her 14 Vitality Blast appearances saw her score 168 runs and take six wickets.

Alex progressed through the Welsh youth system and was also part of the England Development Programme. She then joined the Western Storm Pathway and was part of the South West Regional Development Centre before being named as a member of Storm’s training squad in 2018.

Her full debut came in the 2019 Kia Super League, and she went on to feature in four further matches in the tournament that summer as Storm lifted the trophy. Alex signed her first professional contract the following year.

Her 41 List A matches for Western Storm yielded 694 runs, with a best of 80, and 24 wickets. She also featured in 30 T20s for Storm, scoring more than 170 runs and claiming 10 wickets. Alex has also featured in The Hundred representing Welsh Fire.

Alex said: “I’m really pleased to have extended my contract at Somerset, and hopefully we can carry on building as a team. It means a lot that the Club have faith in me and are going to continue to support me in my role. Somerset is a great Club and we’re trying to build something special here within the women’s set up to emulate the success of the men.

“Hopefully, the next couple of years will see us start lifting some silverware and hopefully I can play a part in that. Winning a trophy would be very nice. We’ve got a young team, and we’ve got a lot to learn but it’s a really, really exciting time. Everyone’s ready to fight for each other and take the team on to the next level.”

Somerset Head Coach, Erin Osborne said: “Alex is a genuine all rounder who has the ability to change the momentum of a game. With the bat she is a powerful striker and she can bowl a heavy ball. Her passion for the game makes her a key member of our dressing room. I am looking forward to seeing how she continues to develop over the next few years.”

Somerset CCC Director of Talent & Women’s Performance, Matt Drakeley added: “Alex is a genuine three-dimensional cricketer who adds value with bat, ball and in the field, and that all-round contribution is hugely important to the team we are building. We are really pleased to extend her contract and look forward to seeing her continue to grow her game and win matches for Somerset over the coming years.”
