Surrey frustrate Somerset on Day One
An unbeaten partnership of 153 for the fifth wicket between Dan Lawrence and Ben Foakes (64*) ensured that Surrey had the better of the opening day of this Rothesay County Championship encounter in front of almost 3000 spectators at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
The pair frustrated the home attack as the visitors finished the day on 327 for four with Lawrence unbeaten on 105.
The last time these two sides met at Taunton it was one of the most dramatic ends to a match in the long history of the County Championship, and although this iteration of this classic rivalry lacked the fireworks of that encounter in 2024, it was certainly intriguing fare.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Surrey Captain Rory Burns (31) shared an opening stand of 47 with Dom Sibley before top edging an attempted sweep off Jack Leach high into the Taunton sky which allowed Tom Abell to take a sharp catch on the run.
Sibley and Ryan Patel then took the score to 78 before the latter fell to Archie Vaughan for 16. The Somerset spinner found the outside edge and Craig Overton did the rest at first slip.
By the time the lunch interval arrived, Surrey had advanced to 86 for two.
After the break, the visitors went to three figures off the final ball of the 37th over.
The score had advanced to 131 when Lewis Gregory trapped Ollie Pope (24) lbw with an absolute beauty.
Sibley had eased his way to 72 when he fell into the cleverly laid trap that had been set for him. With the score on 174, the former England batter flicked a leg side delivery from Migael Pretorius straight to Abell who was positioned and waiting at leg slip.
An additional nine runs were added to the total by the time the clock on the Colin Atkinson Pavilion ticked around to signal tea.
Shortly after the resumption of play, Lawrence and Foakes took their side to the 200-mark off the final ball of the 70th over.
Lawrence’s 50 arrived from 86 deliveries, and despite Somerset taking the new ball as soon as it became available, the Surrey 250 was displayed in the 83rd over.
Foakes and Lawrence continued to repel the Somerset attack and the 100 partnership came from 156 balls before the former reached his half century from 93 deliveries.
The Surrey 300 came in the 90th over and Lawrence went to three figures with a big six in the final over of the day. His century arrived from 135 balls and included nine fours and four sixes.
