Somerset wrap up big win on day three
Somerset wrapped up a comfortable and comprehensive victory over Glamorgan on the third day of this Rothesay County Championship Division One match at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
The victory, by an innings and 64 runs, keeps the home side’s dreams of a maiden County Championship title very much alive.
Craig Overton, Lewis Gregory and Jack Leach all claimed three wickets as the visitors were skittled for 183.
Glamorgan resumed on 30 for one, trailing by 217.
12 runs had been added to the overnight total when Migael Pretorius got one to move away from Kiran Carlson who edged behind without scoring.
Craig Overton then generated some extra bounce which squared up Ben Kellaway (6) who could only fend the ball to Lewis Gregory at third slip as the away side slipped to 65 for three.
Asa Tribe had advanced nicely to 49 before Jack Leach turned one which found the batter’s outside edge and Overton did the rest at first slip.
When Colin Ingram returned to the dressing room after edging a beauty from Overton through to James Rew, the scoreboard was showing 81 for five.
By the time the lunch interval arrived the score was 111.
Sean Dickson and Chris Cooke (20) gave Glamorgan hope by sharing a sixth wicket stand of 62 until the latter pulled Overton straight to Josh Thomas on the boundary.
143 for six soon became 150 for nine as Somerset blew the visitors away.
Dan Douthwaite fell lbw to his first delivery from Leach, Dickson (47) flashed at one from Gregory allowing Tom Abell to take the catch at second slip and then Connor O’Riordan was bowled by Gregory for 0.
Timm van der Gugten and Mir Hamza temporarily managed to delay the inevitable, but when the latter slapped Gregory straight to Overton at extra cover the game was up.
