Somerset v Yorkshire ends in stalemate

SCORECARD/MATCH CENTRE

Somerset and Yorkshire played out the inevitable draw on the rain-affected fourth and final day of this Rothesay County Championship match at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

It’s a draw that favoured the hosts as Somerset claimed 14 points to Yorkshire’s nine.

The visitors resumed on 17 without lose and Finlay Bean and Adam Lyth steadily took the visitors to 32 before three wickets fell in the space of six deliveries.

First, Bean got an absolute beauty from Lewis Gregory which he could only feather behind, and then Mayank Agarwal edged his first ball straight to Tom Abell at third slip.

James Wharton survived the hat trick ball from the Somerset skipper but fell to the second ball of the next over. He highlighted the old adage that there are two types of leave when he shouldered arms to Josh Davey and watched on in horror as the ball nipped back and clattered his off stump.

All of a sudden the visitors were 33 for three and it wasn’t long before that became 41 for four when Jonny Bairstow edged Davey to Tom Kohler Cadmore at first slip.

The Yorkshire 50 arrived off the opening delivery of the 14th over, but the final ball of the very same over saw Matthew Revis edge Ben Green behind for nine.

Despite unseasonal sunshine throughout the morning, a heavy shower saw the players leave the field at 11:41 with the scoreboard showing 56 for five.

Play resumed at 12:55 and after Green completed his over, Jack Leach was brought into the attack at the River End. The Somerset spinner struck with his fifth delivery, trapping George Hill lbw for four at 57 for six.

At 60 for six Lyth survived a huge appeal when Somerset were convinced that he had edged Leach to first slip where Kasey Aldridge took a superb one-handed catch but the umpires were unmoved.

Rain began to fall again at 12:10 and an early lunch was taken. The inclement weather was unrelenting and an early tea was also taken.

Play finally got back underway at 3pm as Jack Leach finished his over that had begun shortly after midday.

The next over was bowled by Green and he had Dom Bess caught behind for two off his third delivery as Yorkshire fell to 60 for seven.

Following the departure of the former Somerset spinner, the visitors began to accelerate the run rate as Lyth and Jordan Thompson went on the front foot.

The ball began to disappear to all corners of the ground and the Yorkshire 100 arrived after 24 overs.

The 50 partnership came from just 38 deliveries and Thompson went to 50 from 42 balls.

However, Davey stemmed the flow, trapping Thompson lbw for 57 at 128 for eight, and Somerset claimed another precious bowling point when Lyth finally fell fell 30, caught at short leg by Abell off the bowling of Leach for the addition of just four further runs to the total.

The players eventually shook hands at 4:20 to bring an end to this somewhat staccato encounter.

Davey was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 34.
