Somerset trail by 65 at the end of day two

MATCH CENTRE/SCORECARD

The visitors enjoyed the best of the second day of this three-day pre-season match between Somerset and Glamorgan at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

In the opening session of the day, former Somerset batters Eddie Byrom and Sean Dickson saw off the opening salvos from Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory and brought up the 50 partnership for the second wicket before taking their side to three figures in the 29th over.

The score was on 104 when Josh Shaw replaced Gregory at the River End and he nearly struck in his opening over, but Tom Kohler Cadmore was unable to hold on to a diving opportunity at first slip.

The home side didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough and it was Shaw who supplied it. A full length delivery bowled Dickson who departed for 48 at 110 for two in the 32nd over.

Byrom reached his 50 from 108 balls and the visitor’s 150 arrived in the 39th over. Byrom and Kiran Carlson then brought up the 50-partnership for the third wicket from 49 balls. Their stand was worth 72 when the Glamorgan skipper drove Leach straight to Overton and departed for 42. His runs came from just 31 balls.

At lunch the visitors had reached 196 for three with Byrom unbeaten on 81.

After the break the partnership between Byrom and Ben Kellaway passed the 50-mark from 78 balls and the latter reached his half century from 59 deliveries.

Byrom reached three figures on his old stomping ground from 189 balls. Shortly thereafter, he retired out on 104 at 275 for four.

Josh Thomas was brought into the attack at the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End and he made an immediate breakthrough when he bowled Zain ul Hassan (1) with his third delivery for the addition of just nine runs to the total.

The 300 arrived in the 70th over and by the time the tea interval arrived the score had advanced to 344 but not before Kellaway had reached his century from 112 balls. Shortly afterwards, he retired out on 106.

Chris Cooke had moved to 48 when he edged Ball through to Overton in the slips to depart at 369 for seven. It was at this point that the declaration came with a lead of 146.

Somerset suffered an early set back when Thomas played on to Timm van der Gugten with just four runs on the board and then things got worse when Kohler Cadmore was dismissed by the same bowler for the addition of just three further runs to the total.

James Rew and Tom Lammonby had advanced the score to 43 but the former was bowled by the fourth ball of Mason Crane’s opening over.

Lammonby and Tom Abell took Somerset to the close with the scoreboard showing 81 for three.

The home side will begin tomorrow trailing by 65 runs.
