Six for Jack as Somerset claim stunning win on day two

MATCH CENTRE/SCORECARD

Jack Leach claimed his 25th First Class five-wicket haul for Somerset as the home side claimed a dramatic two-day win over Durham in the Rothesay County Championship at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

After bowling the visitors out for 190, the home side initially made hard work of chasing down the victory target of 86 but Tom Banton helped to ensure that Somerset got over the line to win by five wickets.

Durham resumed on five for two and Somerset opened up with Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton, both starting with maidens. The hosts turned to spin after 25 minutes, but Archie Vaughan’s opening over yielded 16 runs.

Neil Wagner brought up the Durham 50 by depositing Jack Leach into the Hildreth Stand for a big six which also saw the 50 partnership arrive from 57 deliveries. However, the New Zealander’s stubborn resistance was finally broken with the score on 76 when he was lbw to Vaughan for 42 looking to reverse sweep. His partnership with Emilio Gay was worth 75.

Leach then got in on the act as Gay fell for 42, caught brilliantly by Overton at short mid wicket, without further addition to the total. 76 for four quickly became 77 for five when Colin Ackermann chipped Leach to mid off where Tom Banton took a stunning diving catch on the run.

Ollie Robinson and Graham Clark shared a sixth wicket stand of 40 before Robinson looked to put Vaughan into the Trescothick Pavilion and played all around it to depart for 28.

By the time the lunch interval arrived the visitors had reached 152 for seven, a lead of 47.

After the break, Leach completed his five-for when Clark looked to block but edged behind at 166 for eight. The score had advanced to 178 when George Drissell got a leading edge and Leach took a simple catch off his own bowling.

The last wicket pair of Ben Raine (36) and Matthew Potts added 12 but when the former was caught by Banton at long off to give Vaughan his fourth wicket Durham were all out for 190.

Leach finished with a season best six for 63.

Requiring 86 to win, Somerset suffered early setbacks when Josh Davey was lbw to Callum Parkinson in the third over with just 13 runs on the board and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (10) edged the same bowler to Potts at second slip.

James Rew was given a life when he was put down at second slip with just five runs to his name.

The score had advanced to 43 when Tom Lammonby was bowled by Parkinson for 22, and when Rew (9) advanced down the wicket only to chip the ball straight to Alex Lees Somerset were 48 for four and Parkinson had them all.

Tom Banton brought up the Somerset 50 with a reverse sweep but Tom Abell was bowled by Drissell for six as the home side slipped to 62 for five.

However, Banton swept his side to victory, literally, with an unbeaten 33 from 22 balls, which included a glorious reverse sweep for six.
