Rain curtails Yorkshire fightback

SCORECARD/MATCH CENTRE

Yorkshire fought back valiantly on the second day of this Rothesay County Championship Division One match against Somerset at the Cooper Associates County Ground, but in the end the weather was the only winner.

Heavy rain began to to fall shortly after lunch and curtailed play for the day.

Somerset resumed on 201 for three but the day got off to the worst possible start for the home side when yesterday’s hero, Josh Thomas edged the fifth ball of the morning from Jack White through to Jonny Bairstow without adding to his overnight score of 136.

201 for three was suddenly 201 for five when Thomas Rew (0) fell to a Fin Bean catch at third slip to give White his second wicket of the morning.

Tom Abell advanced to his 42nd First Class 50 but George Hill found his outside edge and Joe Root took the catch at first slip with the scoreboard now displaying 223 for six.

When Craig Overton was bowled for one by a super delivery from Logan van Beek Somerset had slipped to 229 for seven and the visitors were right back in the match.

Will Smeed and Lewis Gregory shared a stand of 42 before the latter looked to dispatch Dom Bess into the James Hildreth Stand only for Root to take a good catch on the run.

Migael Pretorius (3) then edged Matthew Revis to Root at first slip before Alfie Ogborne flicked the next ball to Bess at mid wicket as Somerset were dismissed for 274, a lead of 112, and that was lunch.

White was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four for 41 from 16 overs.

After the break, Adam Lyth and Fin Bean had taken the Yorkshire second innings to 13 without loss when the rain began to fall, sending the players scurrying for the cover of the dressing rooms.

No further play was possible and we will go again tomorrow when Yorkshire take to the crease trailing by 99.
