Captain’s innings from Lewis as Somerset brush Warwickshire aside
A century from Lewis Goldsworthy and career best List A figures from James Theedom helped Somerset to a dominant Metro Bank One Day Cup victory over Warwickshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
Somerset skipper, Goldsworthy smashed his way to 103 whilst Theedom claimed four for 54 from 9.4 overs as Somerset claimed the win by 125 runs.
Chasing 338, the visitors were dismissed for just 212 with 10.2 overs to spare as Somerset made it two wins in three days.
After being invited to bat first, Somerset lost Archie Vaughan to the fourth ball of the day, a good in-swinger from Ethan Bamber, before a run was registered on the scoreboard.
After the 10-over powerplay the score had moved to 31, and Savin Perera and Tom Lammonby brought up the Somerset 50 in the 13th over as the pair looked to increase the run rate. However, Perera fell lbw to Rob Yates for 39 whilst looking to sweep at 70 for two in the 15th over.
The Somerset 100 arrived in the 22nd over before Lammonby went to his third half century in as many matches from 63 deliveries.
The 50 partnership for the third wicket between Lammonby and Lewis Goldsworthy came from 57 balls with the 100 partnership arriving from just 98 deliveries.
The stand was eventually worth 102 when Lammonby, who now has 260 runs in the competition, was run out for 85 looking for two but Zen Malik’s throw was true and the umpire’s finger was raised.
Goldsworthy went to his half century from 57 deliveries and shortly thereafter Somerset reached the 200 mark.
The 50-run stand for the fourth wicket came from just 38 deliveries as Goldsworthy and Josh Thomas upped the tempo. Indeed, 17 runs came from the 41st over, sent down by Bamber, as back to back sixes from Thomas took the home side past 250.
Thomas reached his second consecutive 50 from 37 deliveries but fell to his very next delivery, picking out Yates on the boundary to give Jake Lintott a wicket.
Goldsworthy continued to accumulate runs and he went to his century in style by pulling Charlie Taylor into the Somerset Stand for a big maximum. His hundred came from 88 balls and included two sixes and seven fours.
The Somerset skipper added three more runs to his total before being stumped off Lintott at 300 for five in the 47th over. Johnny Connell fell in the same over, switch hitting Lintott to Kai Smith on the boundary after sending the previous ball into the Somerset stand for a big maximum.
Ben Church was caught behind for eight off Bamber at 329 for seven in the 49th and Josh Shaw (12) fell in similar fashion to Oliver Hannon-Dalby at 333 for eight in the 50th.
Somerset eventually finished on 337 for eight, two runs short of the Club’s highest List A score against today’s visitors.
The home side made an early breakthrough when Lammonby brilliantly ran out Yates with a superb throw from point.
15 for one soon became 39 for two when Vaansh Jani edged JT Langridge behind.
James Theedom was brought into the attack at the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End and struck with his fourth delivery when he had Malik caught at mid off by Goldsworthy at 62 for three in the 12th over.
When Alex Davies picked out Thomas on the boundary off Jake Ball, the visitors were struggling at 78 for four, and when that became 85 for five curtesy of another great run out from Lammonby, George Garton was the victim on this occasion, Warwickshire were in trouble.
However, Kai Smith and Lintott shared a sixth wicket stand of 60 to get their side back on track.
The partnership was broken when Smith (44) lofted Langridge back over the bowlers head only for Jake Ball to take a good catch on the boundary rope.
Bamber was the next batter to fall, caught on the boundary in front of Gimblett’s Hill by Lammonby to give Theedom his second wicket of the day.
Lintott’s valiant resistance finally ended for a List A career best 52, his 50 coming at a run a ball. He fell to a great diving catch from Langridge to give Theedom his third wicket.
Tazeem Chaudry Ali then edged Ball through to Church to leave Warwickshire on 201 for nine in the 39th over.
The game was up when Hannon-Dalby was caught and bowled by Theedom to complete a dominant display by the home side.
