Will available for all formats in 2025

Somerset batter Will Smeed has signed a revised contract which will see him available for selection for Somerset in all formats of the game during 2025.

Last summer saw the 23-year-old sign a contract extension to play white ball cricket for the Club until at least the end of the 2026 season. The updated agreement means that the King’s College graduate will be available to play County Championship cricket this year.

With the 2025 season now almost upon us, Will, who played three Second XI County Championship matches at the end of last season and scored an impressive 198 runs at an average 49.50, is raring to go. “I want to be a part of that team and contribute to some wins,” he said. “I’m desperate to play more cricket than I did last summer.

“I picked up an injury last summer and it felt like I hadn’t really played any cricket. I played a few Second XI red ball games towards the end of last year and really enjoyed it. That’s when I started to think that this would be a good option.

“Watching how the team went about things in the Championship last year was great and some of the wins were absolutely insane. It would be crazy to not want to be a part of that team.”

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry is pleased that Will is returning to the red ball squad. “We all know Will has a huge amount of potential, and his return to multi-day cricket will certainly add depth to our County Championship batting options.

“When he initially signed a white ball contract, he always made it clear that the door was not closed to the red ball game, and I know our Members and supporters will be excited by the prospect of him now being available to be considered for selection in all formats for the Club that he loves.”

Will made his debut for the Somerset Under 10s in 2010 as an eight-year-old and worked his way through the Somerset Age Group sides before joining the Somerset Academy in 2016. He made his Second XI debut against Middlesex at Taunton Vale at the age of just 15 in 2017.

His Somerset First XI debut came in the Vitality Blast against Worcestershire at Taunton in 2020 and signed his first professional contract ahead of the 2021 season.

An integral element of Somerset’s 2023 Vitality Blast winning side, Will has played 64 T20 matches for the Club, scoring 1669 runs with 12 half centuries and a best of 98 against Surrey in 2022. In the same year, he became the first batter to score 100 in The Hundred.
