“This Club is unique”: Lewis Looks back on 2024 – Part 2

The summer of 2024 was one of what might have been for Somerset County Cricket Club.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on all three trophies in the final stages of the season, Lewis Gregory believes that the team deserve credit for their performances.

We caught up with Lewis recently to look back on his first year as Club Captain.

In a season with so many memorable moments, was there one in particular that stood out?

“It’s really hard to narrow the season down to just one moment because there were so many things that were memorable about this summer. If I had to pick one it would be the Championship game against Surrey at home. That last hour was crazy and it showed the character and mentality that we’ve got in the dressing room. To never give up on the win against such quality opposition is exactly what we want from this team. It was just an unbelievable last hour.

Once again, several young players broke into the First XI and made a major impact. How impressed was Lewis by what he saw from the likes of Archie Vaughan and Alfie Ogborne?

“It’s exciting and it’s what we want to see. The Club keeps producing players who come into the First Team and perform. Archie’s had an unbelievable start to his career, and it was really good to see Alfie doing what he did in that last four-day game and in the One Day Cup. We’ve also got quality in the more experienced players and that blends well with the youth. When you then add in some good overseas signings then you’ve got a squad that should be challenging for silverware on a regular basis.”

What does the squad need to do in 2025 to ensure that we go one step better and secure a trophy?

“Winning silverware is incredibly hard to do,” Lewis said. “When you look back over the last few years, how many clubs have actually been winning things? The only team that does it consistently is Surrey.

“We may not have the money or the facilities that other clubs do, but what we do have is a certain uniqueness. This Club is unique. So are the people who work here, the ground, the town and the region. They’re all really special and there’s a real family feel to it. That’s what brings the best out in the players.

“We want to win trophies. That’s why we play the game. At the start of every year, we want to win all three competitions. Is there a formula or something that we need to be doing to get over the line? I’m not sure, but what I do know is that we’ve got some outstanding cricketers who are determined to give the Members and supporters what they want. We’ll look back on the last few weeks of the season and maybe make a few minor tweaks, but I don’t think that there’s too much that we need to do differently.

“Obviously, next year is a huge one for the Club and it would be a lovely way to celebrate the 150th anniversary if we could put in some amazing performances on the park. We’ll be working hard all winter to give ourselves the best possible chance of doing that.”
