“The trip has been superb so far” – Jason pleased with T20 performances
Somerset claimed third spot in the Abu Dhabi T20 Super Cup at the weekend and Head Coach, Jason Kerr is pleased with how the Club’s pre-season programme is progressing.
“The trip has been superb so far,” he explained. “It’s been a really good opportunity for the guys to play some competitive cricket against good opposition and it’s given the players the chance to hone their skills and physically get ready for the start of the season.
“There were some strong individual performances within the three games. Sean Dickson was impressive with the bat, whilst Alfie Ogborne and Josh Davey closed the games out well with the ball. It’s important to note that although we’ve been playing in a white ball competition, we haven’t spent a lot of time on our white ball skills yet. Red ball cricket is just around the corner, and we’ve been focusing on that, so to do well in this competition just demonstrates the quality that we’ve got within the squad.
“Batters have had time in the middle and our bowlers have got some good overs in. That will continue with a couple more days of red ball practice before our two-day game against Yorkshire over here which begins on Friday.
“When we get back, we’ve got a three-day game at Taunton against Gloucestershire to help with the transition back into English conditions and we will be raring to go by the time Worcestershire arrive at the Cooper Associates County Ground for that first Championship match of the season.”
Jason believes that the non-cricket elements of the trip are equally important.
“The off the field elements have gone brilliantly as well,” he said. “The younger players are getting to spend time amongst the senior guys and they’re learning by seeing how those guys go about their business on a daily basis. We’ve been able to spend a lot of time together as a group and are developing absolute clarity on how we want to play our cricket from day one right the way through until the end of September.
“Everyone is incredibly excited about the summer ahead and we will be doing everything that we can to ensure that we’re as prepared as we need to be.”
