Somerset v Yorkshire: Day Two Report

DAY TWO

Somerset’s batters spent valuable time at the crease on the final day of this two-day red ball pre-season fixture against Yorkshire in Abu Dhabi.

Craig Overton top scored with 66 as Somerset finished the day on 338 for 10.

Somerset overcame the early loss of Sean Dickson as Andy Umeed and Tom Lammonby shared a second wicket stand of 47 to take the score to 62. Lammonby was the batter to go, bowed by Dom Bess for 30. Umeed and Lewis Goldsworthy then took their side to lunch at 94 for two.

Umeed (35) and Goldsworthy (36) helped their side to 202 for seven at tea, whilst Dickson (32) and Lammonby (27) batted for a second time to gain important time in the middle before Overton stole the show with his excellent innings which demonstrated both power and precision.

At the conclusion of the game, Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “Once again we’re happy with how the day went. Numerous batters had time in the middle and were able to demonstrate what they’ve been working on over the winter. Andy Umeed and Sean Dickson looked assured and I thought that Lewis Goldsworthy batted superbly as did Craig.

“Overall, the two days have been a fantastic exercise and set us up really well ahead of our three-day game against Gloucestershire. The guys have found it incredibly valuable. Obviously, the batters are always hungry for more runs but it wasn’t about that today, it was about having the opportunity to be out in the middle.

“Pre-season can be difficult. You have to manage over 20 players and make sure that they get everything that they need as individuals and as a team. I feel like we’ve managed to do that and all of the staff have been incredible and have worked extremely hard.

“I think this has been the best pre-season that we’ve had, so hopefully we can take that into the summer.”

DAY ONE

James Rew claimed five victims as Somerset’s bowlers impressed on the opening day of this two-day red ball pre-season fixture against Yorkshire in Abu Dhabi.

Bowling first, Somerset reduced the White Rose County to three for two as Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean were caught behind by Rew off the bowling of Josh Davey and Craig Overton respectively.

Jonny Bairstow (37) helped take the total to 68 before becoming Rew’s third victim, this time off the bowling of Jack Leach as Yorkshire reached 101 for three from 31 overs at lunch.

After the break, James Wharton fell one run shy of his half century when Rew claimed his fourth catch to give Ben Green a wicket at 108 for four.

Jonathan Tattersall and George Hill shared a 61-run stand before the former was stumped by Rew off Shoaib Bashir for 27, and Archie Vaughan bowled Matt Revis to see the scoreboard to 210 for six.

Will Luxton was bowled by Overton for 16 whilst Alfie Ogborne removed both Lyth (5) and Bean (1) who were both batting for a second time as Yorkshire finished on 311 for nine.

Hill finished on 51 whilst Harry Duke top scored with 61 not out.

At the close of play, Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “I think it’s been an excellent day in challenging conditions in terms of the heat. Josh Davey and Craig Overton were very good with the new ball. We all know how talented they are, but it was nevertheless good to see them showcasing those skills. It was also good to see Lewis Gregory out there proving his fitness ahead of the start of the new season.

“Alfie Ogborne looked good taking the second new ball and you can see how much he’s grown over the winter, plus Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir both demonstrated their class. All in all, it was a fantastic day for us on what was a fairly placid surface, so we’re all pretty pleased.

“We now have the opportunity to bat for the day tomorrow and that will of course be a challenge against a strong Yorkshire attack. Hopefully, the guys can get through the new ball and spend some time in the middle and build good partnerships which will help build confidence ahead of the summer.

“The difficulty with pre-season games is trying to find that big match intensity but I feel like the guys got as close as possible to that today.”
