Somerset Name Women’s Leadership Group

Sophie Luff has been re-appointed as Captain of Somerset CCC for the 2026 season, which gets underway in earnest on April 11th.

Sophie, who was born in Taunton, played through the age groups and made her Somerset debut in 2009 at the age of 15, since when she has remained heavily involved in the women’s game in the county.

She captained Western Storm and in September 2024 she was the first player given a professional contract with Somerset’s new women’s team, which she went on to captain in their first ever season in 2025.

Regarding the captaincy, Somerset Head Coach, Erin Osborne said: “Sophie is a wonderful person and sets the standards for our club. She genuinely cares about Somerset cricket and wants us to do well. She sees the bigger picture, and not only wants to do well herself, but she also genuinely cares about the people around her so I think that we’re fortunate to have her in that position.”

Somerset have also named two Vice Captains for 2026, as Erin explained. “Niamh Holland and Bex Odgers will be supporting Sophie as Vice Captains, and I’m looking forward to seeing them evolve in that leadership group. When I had the opportunity to tell them, they were so excited and I can just see that they’ve grown and matured. I think they will support Sophie really well.”

Regarding her re-appointment, Sophie said: “It’s brilliant news. Somerset is my home club, and this is something that I’ve always wanted to do. To be given the opportunity to lead the girls again this season is fantastic and I’m glad that Erin has asked me to continue in the role.

Speaking about her two Vice-Captains, Sophie said: “We are keen to create more of a leadership group to help me out both on and off the field which means I can delegate a little bit more and give them a bit more responsibility.

“We feel that we’ve got a duty to up-skill some leaders from within our group. I think nationwide the county game needs to start developing more and more leaders and we feel that this is a great opportunity for Bex and Niamh to come into the mix.”
