Rookie Contract for Thomas

Somerset County Cricket Club are pleased to be able to announce that Academy wicketkeeper/batter, Thomas Rew has signed his first rookie contract.

The 17-year-old, who made his First XI debut for the Club earlier this season in the Vitality Blast, has put pen to paper on a contract which will run from November 1st until at least the end of October 2027.

The first year of the contract will be carried out in conjunction with King’s College in order to ensure that his cricket and academic programme are optimally aligned.

Thomas worked his way onto the Somerset Academy via the Somerset Emerging Player Programme, made his Second XI debut for the Club in 2023 and has gone on to captain England Under 19s.

He was named in the PCC Select XI earlier this summer for their match against Zimbabwe and scored an unbeaten century in the second innings.

After signing his first rookie contract, Thomas said: “I’m delighted to be signing this contract with Somerset. I’ve worked hard to achieve this goal over the last few years and I’m very grateful for all the work that Somerset’s Age Group and Academy coaches have put into my game since l joined the Pathway at Under 10s.

“I would like to thank both my school, Kings College Taunton, and my club, Taunton St Andrews, for the huge part they have played in getting me to this stage.

“I look forward to training with the squad and coaches over the winter and then I aim to work hard to earn a First Team place and contribute as much as possible in all three formats.”

Matt Drakeley, SCCC Director of Talent & Development added: “Thomas’s rookie contract is a proud moment for everyone involved in his journey. He’s been recognised as a high-potential player from an early age, and his progression through the Somerset Pathway and Academy reflects the hard work, development, and performance he’s shown across all formats.

“This contract is a credit to the support network around him. His family, Taunton St Andrews CC, and King’s College have each played a role in creating the environment and opportunities for Thomas to develop.”
