Pre-Season: Somerset v Hampshire

SCORECARD

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first.

Ellie Anderson made an early breakthrough when she bowled Rhianna Southby for 1 in the fourth over with just seven runs on the board.

The score had advanced to 28 in the 11th over when Abi Norgrove looked to give herself room but was undone by Chloe Skelton and had to depart for six.

28 for two soon became 33 for three when former Western Storm all rounder Naomi Dattani (5) was run out by Somerset skipper Niamh Holland when attempting a quick single off Skelton.

Skelton then accounted for Nancy Harman (3) in her next over. The Hampshire batter tried to flick one off her pads but picked out Holland at 37 for four.

Megan Sturge (1) looked to go big against Lola Harris but could only find Erin Vukusic on the boundary in front of the Colin Atkinson Pavilion to leave the visitors on 45 for five in the 14th over.

Ella McCaughan and Francesca Sweet shared a sixth wicket stand of 54 but their resistance was broken when the latter departed for 26. With the score on 99 she chipped the ball straight back to Liv Barnes who took a good tumbling catch off her own bowling.

The Hampshire 100 arrived off the fourth ball of the 24th over but just two deliveries later Poppy Tulloch (0) was trapped lbw by Holland without further addition to the total.

McCaughan reached her 50 from 75 balls but her partners continued to fall by the wayside.

Pippa Sproul was next to return to the pavilion after getting a leading edge to Holland before Bex Odgers did the rest at 131 for eight in the 30th over, and it wasn’t long before she was joined in the dressing room by Daisy Gibb whose first delivery saw her bowled by Skelton.

Tyson also fell without scoring, caught behind by Jess Hazell off Skelton, but the visitors batted on.

McCaughan eventually fell lbw to Holland for an impressive 66 and Hannah Hardwick (2) was bowled by an absolute beauty from Vukusic.

Eva Lee was bowled by Anderson for eight, Norgrove was caught by Griffiths off the bowling of Barnes before Griffiths accounted for Southby (29).

Vukusic then removed Dattani and Sturge in the final over.

Skelton finished with figures of four for 23 from seven overs whilst there were three wickets apiece for Vukusic and Holland.

Chasing 204, Somerset made a solid start with Odgers and Holland sharing an opening stand of 77 before the former was bowled by Tyson for 25 in the 18th over.

The Somerset 100 arrived after 22 overs but five runs later Ruby Davis (17) was dismissed by Sturge.

Holland went to 50 from 64 balls and had advanced to 67 when she fell to Harman at 142 for three in the 30th over.

The home side went to 150 in the 32nd over but Katie Jones was caught by Hardwick off the bowling of Harman for 13 with the scoreboard displaying 166.

Griffiths and Hazell took Somerset past the required total in the 42nd over and continued to bat, eventually sharing a stand of 75. Griffiths was the batter to fall, stumped for 35.

By the end of their 50 overs, the home side had scored 265 for seven. Hazell was unbeaten on 56 from 78 deliveries.
