New Contract for Jason
Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr has signed a contract extension which will see him remain at the helm until at least the end of the 2026 season.
Jason made his Somerset debut in 1993 and remained with his adopted County until 2001. A shoulder injury brought his career to a premature end in 2002, but the former all-rounder returned to Somerset to lead the Academy and Second XI in 2005 and was appointed Bowling Coach in 2015.
Following his outstanding work with the Somerset Pathway, Jason was appointed as Head Coach ahead of the 2018 season and led the Club to Royal London One-Day Cup success in 2019. This was followed by him steering Somerset to a record-breaking Vitality Blast campaign in 2023 which culminated in victory over Essex Eagles in the final at Edgbaston.
Jason’s achievements as a coach have also been recognised by the ECB, who invited him to undertake a key coaching position with the England Lions in Australia in 2020.
After signing his extension, Jason said: “I’m incredibly excited and privileged to be able to continue this journey. Success as a coach is measured on how far you can take a squad, and I’m fortunate that the ceiling for the current group is extremely high. The key is to be able to deliver on their aspirations.
“We already have a formula for producing players in place which we must continue to challenge and improve. When you add the current group that we have both on and off the field to that, I think we can achieve anything. Behaviourally and culturally, we have a group of people who love playing for this Club and they demonstrate that week in, week out.
“This place means so much to me. Not only is it my home, but I recognise and understand what this Club means to so many people across the South West and further afield. It’s a part of my DNA and always will be. I have a real passion for Somerset that will never diminish.”
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry is delighted to have retained the services of such a high-quality head coach.
“Jason’s record speaks for itself,” he said. “He has led the side to two major trophies and has come within a whisker of adding to that tally on a number of occasions. Since Jason took on the lead role, we have also seen an increased number of players being recognised on a global scale alongside a continuous stream progressing through to international cricket.
“He has played a key role in ensuring that the culture within our dressing room environment is continually evolving to meet the demands of the game and that helps to keep us at the pinnacle of domestic cricket.
“Alongside his will and drive to succeed, he is constantly looking at ways to innovate and challenge the group in order to foster both individual and collective development. We are delighted that he will be remaining with us for the foreseeable future.”
