THE OPPOSITION

Captain: Lewis Hill

Overseas players: Ajinkya Rahane (India), Peter Handscomb (Australia)

2023 finish: Champions

2023 leading run scorer: Peter Handscomb (401)

2023 leading wicket taker: Chris Wright (18)

Key player: Former India Test captain Ajinkya Rahane has joined up with the Foxes squad and is available for the entire competition. With three hundreds and 24 fifties in 90 ODIs on his record, he can make a big impact alongside experienced Aussie Peter Handscomb.

Final thought: Defending their 2023 crown will not be easy, not least with rising stars Hull and Rishi Patel and the big-hitting Louis Kimber joining Rehan Ahmed among five players picked up by The Hundred, but a decent squad remains and with Rahane’s addition they have the potential to be contenders again.

TEAM NEWS

Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Sean Dickson (c), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Ben Green, Kasey Aldridge, Josh Davey, Alfie Ogborne, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach, Riley Meredith and Charlie Cassell.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “This is what we were gunning for at the start of the competition. We wanted to be playing knockout cricket, and we’ve achieved that, but the job is far from complete.

“I’m very proud of the group. They’ve put in a tremendous amount of hard work over the last couple of years and they’ve got better with every game during that period. They’re reaping the rewards of their efforts now and I’m extremely proud of what they’ve achieved. Hopefully, there’s even more to come.

“At the start of the competition we all spoke about the importance of this competition in relation to the history of the Club, and the players are well aware of their responsibilities and what it means to represent the Club in this competition. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to play a good brand of cricket in front of such loyal and passionate support. The backing we’ve had, especially at home, has been unbelievable and we are looking forward to more of the same on Sunday.”

PLAYER MATCHUP – BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOPER ASSOCIATES

CLASSIC MATCH

We go back to 1980 for the classic List A match between Somerset and Leicestershire.

The two sides met at Taunton in the 40-over John Player League in August that year and a century from Viv Richards helped the hosts to a 41-run victory.

After being asked to bat first in a match that had been reduced to 39 over per side, Somerset lost Peter Denning and Peter Roebuck early to slip to 47 for two, but Richards was at his sublime best. On a day when only one other player from either side made in excess of 33, Somerset’s talisman smashed his way to 113 as Somerset posted 205 for six.

The visitors were reduced to 44 for three early on, but David Gower made 56 before being bowled by Hallam Moseley. Only four other Leicestershire batters made double figures as the visitors were limited to 164 for eight. Moseley finished with two for 39, whilst there were also two wickets for Nigel Popplewell and Vic Marks.
