Metro Bank One Day Cup Preview: Somerset v Northants Steelbacks
THE MATCH
Somerset welcome Northants Steelbacks to the Cooper Associates County Ground in the Metro Bank One Day Cup tomorrow (Tuesday August 26th).
KNOCK OUT STAGE PERMUTATIONS
Somerset currently sit second in the One Day Cup group B table. A win would see the Club well placed to progress through to knockout stages but net run rate will come into play if both Warwickshire and Middlesex win as well. If Somerset take second place in the group, this would mean a home “playoff” fixture on Thursday.
After Yorkshire’s win over Sussex yesterday, the chances of progressing straight to a home Semi-Final on Sunday are remote. Somerset’s win over Kent keeps us ahead of the chasing pack on Net Run Rate for the home “play-off”, although mathematically the Club couldn’t assured of that or even qualification more generally if Warwickshire and Middlesex thrash their opponents on Tuesday.
Information regarding potential qualification for the knock out stages of the competition will become available once all the group stage matches have been completed. As soon as the group tables have been finalised, details of any further Metro Bank One Day Cup fixtures will be made available by the Club as soon as possible. Keep an eye on this website and our social media channels for updates.
Due to the incredibly short turnaround between the group stage and the knockout matches, we ask all supporters to bear with us if Somerset do progress.

THE OPPOSITION
NORTHANTS STEELBACKS
Captain: Lewis McManus
2024 Position: Eighth (Group A)
2024 Most Runs: Prithvi Shaw (343)
2024 Most Wickets: Justin Broad (13)
Overview: Despite losing more players to The Hundred than ever before, Northamptonshire boast a strong squad who mounted an impressive challenge in the Vitality Blast. They are boosted by Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who has been in devastating form in the Rothesay County Championship and Tim Robinson, fresh from New Zealand’s recent white-ball tour of Zimbabwe.
Player to watch: Last season’s leading wicket-taker, allrounder Justin Broad is firing with bat and ball, with back-to-back scores of 150 plus in the Championship during July.
Young gun: After impressing in the Second XI and Academy, 17-year-old spinner Nirvan Ramesh recently signed a two-month rookie contract and was named in the squad for the recent Championship game against Derbyshire to give him more experience. Highly rated by the coaching staff he looks set to feature during the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
Final thought: Northamptonshire need to channel the white-ball form that saw them open their T20 campaign with six straight wins. Even without key bowlers in Ben Sanderson and George Scrimshaw, Northamptonshire can call on a battery of seamers led by Broad and the experienced Luke Procter. The Steelbacks will also hope Kiwi international Robinson can help plug the run-scoring gap left by the prolific Saif Zaib on Hundred duty.
TEAM NEWS
Somerset have named the following squad for the match:
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “Obviously, everyone is desperate to secure knock out cricket. It’s what the players deserve for their performances and it’s what the Members and supporters deserve for their incredible backing. Everyone has played their part so far in the competition, but what’s really exciting is that I still think there’s more to come from the squad.
“Northants will be looking to end the campaign on a high but we have to make sure that we don’t enable that to happen. The players can’t wait to get back out in front of another big crowd on Tuesday and everyone is determined to make sure that this isn’t our last game in the tournament.”
CLASSIC MATCH
It’s back to 1988 for the classic List A match between the two sides at Taunton.
It was a 40-over clash that Somerset won by two wicket thanks to a century from Steve Waugh.
Somerset skipper, Vic Marks won the toss and elected to field.
Gary Palmer claimed three for 37 as the visitors were dismissed for 211 with two balls remaining.
Somerset slipped to 98 for four but Waugh made a masterful 109 not out to ensure that the home side claimed the victory.
