THE OPPOSITION

Captain: Josh Bohannon

Overseas players: Venkatesh Iyer (India), Chris Green (Australia)

2023 finish: Quarter-finalists

2023 leading run scorer: Keaton Jennings (369)

2023 leading wicket taker: Will Williams (13)

Key player: All-rounder George Balderson hit 221 runs and took 10 wickets with his seamers in last season’s competition and has since progressed his game further. The 23-year-old former England Under 19s skipper has been impressive in Lancashire’s Vitality County Championship team and debuted in T20s last month. He just seems to make things happen.

Keep an eye on: This could be the campaign which sees Rocky Flintoff make his first-team debut. The middle order batter, 16, with a famous father has scored centuries for Lancashire’s second team and for the England Under 19s already this summer. He’s a tall, aggressive and fearless right-hander. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?!

Final thought: Beaten finalists in 2022, quarter-finalists last year, Lancashire should go close to making it third time lucky. There are a few ifs, buts and TBCs surrounding their overseas situation. Chris Green, for example, has a Caribbean Premier League T20 deal from late August onwards and is also on standby for The Hundred.

TEAM NEWS

Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Sean Dickson (c), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Kasey Aldridge, Alfie Ogborne, Josh Davey, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach, Charlie Cassell and Joe Heywood.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “The squad is in a good place at the moment and we’re playing some good cricket. I’m really excited by the brand of cricket that we’re playing, but I’m definitely not surprised. Everyone has worked so hard over the last few years and it’s testament to the effort that the players put in day after day in their desire to get better.

“The fact that we haven’t played them for a while brings a certain amount of unknowns. Similar to us, they lose quite a lot of players to The Hundred but they’ve got a quality squad and they’re a strong white ball outfit.”

PLAYER MATCHUP – BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOPER ASSOCIATES

CLASSIC MATCH

The last time that the two sides met in List A cricket at the Cooper Associates County Ground was in 2011.

Somerset faced Lancashire in the 40-over competition in May that year and it was a game that the hosts won by seven wickets.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.

Steven Croft made 107 from 109 balls but only one other batter scored in excess of 30 as the visitors were dismissed for 248.

Lewis Gregory was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, claiming four for 40 from seven overs.

The Somerset reply got off to a solid start as Peter Trego and Marcus Trescothick shared an opening stand of 43, with Trego making 32 of those from just 18 balls.

Trescothick then received good support from Jos Buttler (51 not out), but it was the Somerset skipper who stole the headlines as he made an imperious 111 not out from just 79 balls as Somerset cruised to a comprehensive victory.
