THE OPPOSITION

Captain: Jack Leaning

Overseas players: Charlie Stobo (Australia), Beyers Swanepoel (South Africa)

2023 finish: Fourth (Group A)

2023 leading run scorer: Daniel Bell-Drummond (390)

2023 leading wicket taker: Matt Parkinson (17)

Key player: Ben Compton, an old-school opener who knows exactly how to pace an innings over 50 overs, whether chasing or setting a target. In this format patience can still be a virtue.

Keep an eye on: Jaydn Denly who made five appearances in this competition in 2023 and impressed in the Men’s Youth Test with Sri Lanka at Cheltenham with an enterprising 57. Potentially useful partner for Matt Parkinson and Hamid Qadri if Kent decide to produce some turning wickets.

TEAM NEWS

Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Sean Dickson (c), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Kasey Aldridge, Alfie Ogborne, Josh Davey, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach and Joe Heywood.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “It’s important to get off to a good start because momentum can be key. It builds confidence and a sense of belief in what you’re doing.

“Floodlit matches at the Cooper Associates County Ground are always incredibly special occasions. There’s always a great atmosphere under lights and the support that we get is second to none, so what better way to start this year’s competition.

“Kent are a very good white-ball team and have an impressive heritage within this competition. They’ve got some good players who will have a point to prove after missing out on selection for The Hundred and they’ve got a good blend of youth and experience.

“We need to trust the processes that we have in place and we need to believe in what we are trying to achieve. I fundamentally believe in every member of this squad because I know that they’ve got the skill set to win matches for Somerset.”

KEY PLAYER MATCHUP – BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOPER ASSOCIATES

CLASSIC MATCH

We go back to 2002 for our classic match between the two sides.

It was one of the most dramatic endings that the Taunton faithful have ever witnessed.

Kent required nine runs off 15 balls and looked like certain winners, but Somerset had other ideas!

MATCH SPONSOR – VERTU MOTORS

Vertu Motors – a retail brand of Vertu Motors group – joined forces with Somerset ahead of the 2023 season as the company expanded its presence in the South West region, following the acquisition of 28 dealerships from Helston Garages Group, a number of which were rebranded under the Vertu Motors name.

With the partnership now moving into a second year, Vertu Motors will continue to work with Somerset County Cricket Club to not only support the team on the field, but also support a range of different initiatives in local communities.
