THE OPPOSITION
GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Captain: Jack Taylor
2024 Position: Fifth (Group B)
2024 Most Runs: Miles Hammond (363)
2024 Most Wickets: Ajeet Singh Dale (13)
Overview: Less affected than most rivals by call-ups to The Hundred (only four), Gloucestershire proved themselves a one-day force by winning last season’s Vitality Blast. Despite making a nightmare start to that competition this summer, they reeled off four successive group wins at one stage, beating the likes of Hampshire and Essex.
Player to watch: At the age of 32, Gloucestershire’s red-ball captain Cameron Bancroft boasts more than 3,000 runs in List A cricket at an average of over 40, with five hundreds, and will provide a wealth of experience at the top of the batting order. The Australia Test player has already produced innings of 163 and 176 in the Rothesay County Championship this season.
Young gun: Seam bowler Aman Rao signed for Gloucestershire just before the start of the Vitality Blast and played in the first two group matches against Kent and Sussex. The 21-year-old Loughborough University student is sure to be given more opportunities in the Metro Bank One Day Cup and his height combined with an ability to swing the ball could see him make a significant impact.
Final thought: With head coach Mark Alleyne involved in The Hundred, bowling coach Mark Thorburn takes charge for the second successive year and will be determined to make a better start that last season when the team lost their first two group matches before winning four of the next five and just failing to reach the knock-out stage.
TEAM NEWS
Somerset have named the following squad for the match:
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said:Â “To say that we’re excited about taking on Gloucestershire at home in a knock out fixture is probably an understatement. It doesn’t get much better than playing in front of your home crowd with a semi final at stake. I’m so proud of what this group have achieved so far in the competition but we want more.
“I feel that the group have been outstanding and we’re getting better with each game. There’s a genuine intensity and will to win within this dressing room and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it.
“The squad are desperate to give the Members and supporters another day to remember.”
CLASSIC MATCH
We go back in time to 1982 for the classic List A encounter between the two sides at Taunton.
It was a 55-over Benson & Hedges Cup match that Somerset won by 13 runs thanks to an excellent century from Peter Denning.
Gloucestershire Captain, David Graveney won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first.
Denning shared first and second wicket stands of 124 with Peter Roebuck (44) and Viv Richards (72). Denning went on to make 129 as Somerset posted 307 for six. David Surridge was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 49 from his 11 overs.
Hallam Moseley and Ian Botham both struck early as the visitors slipped to 21 for two, and despite 80 from Phil Bainbridge and 49 not out from Graveney Gloucestershire finished on 294 for seven.
