THE OPPOSITION
Captain: Ross Whiteley
Overseas player: Daryn Dupavillon (South Africa)
2023 finish: Eighth (Group B)
2023 leading run scorer: Luis Reece (392)
2023 leading wicket taker: Sam Conners (12)
Key player: Reece had an impressive tournament in 2023 when he also took 11 wickets with his left-arm swing. The all-rounder can dominate the bowling at the top of the order and will be key to Derbyshire’s chances over the next month.
Keep an eye on: Harry Moore became the youngest player to represent Derbyshire at 16 years and 114 days when he made his debut in the competition against Worcestershire at Derby last August. A tall right-arm quick, his potential has been recognised with selection for England Under-19’s.
Final thought: Although Wayne Madsen and Aneurin Donald are on Hundred duty, the batting still looks strong with Lloyd, Reece and Brooke Guest in the line-up. Pat Brown was a late replacement call for Northern Superchargers but Zak Chappell and Daryn Dupavillon will add a cutting edge to the bowling that was missing in last year’s competition.
TEAM NEWS
Shoaib Bashir returns to the squad following international duty but Riley Meredith is unavailable due to a minor toe injury.
Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Sean Dickson (c), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Kasey Aldridge, Alfie Ogborne, Josh Davey, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir, Charlie Cassell and Joe Heywood.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “We said at the start of the competition that momentum would be key, and the way that we’ve played so far means that confidence within the group is high. Everyone has genuine trust in each others abilities and the players are in a really good place.
“The sign of a good team is that everyone puts their hand up to be counted when it matters, so from that point of view I’ve been really impressed with how we’ve performed so far.
“Derbyshire have a strong side. They’re well coached and a well drilled side. They’ve had a decent tournament so far and they’ve got some dangerous players, so we will need to be on it from ball one.
“The crowd on Friday were incredible. The level of support that we get is amazing and the players certainly benefit from the experience of playing in front of crowds like that.”
PLAYER MATCHUP – BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOPER ASSOCIATES
CLASSIC MATCH
We go back to 1990 for our classic match between the two sides at Taunton.
Somerset faced Derbyshire in the 55-over B&H Cup on May 1st. It was a game that Somerset won by seven wickets.
Somerset skipper Chris Tavare won the toss and elected to bat first.
Jimmy Cook and Jon Hardy shared an opening stand of 126 before Cook fell for 66.
Hardy went on to make 109 and there was a half century from Graham Rose as the hosts posted a total of 310 for three.
Rose then removed Kim Barnett with his first ball before the visitors had even accumulated a run.
However, Peter Bowler and John Morris added 210 for the second wicket to get their side back on track.
The Somerset bowlers then turned the screw and squeezed the life out of the Derbyshire line up, restricting their opponents to 303 for seven from their allotted overs.
