Lewis pledges his future to Somerset
Somerset Club Captain, Lewis Gregory has signed a two-year contract extension.
The allrounder has committed his future to the Club until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Lewis, who played club cricket for Plympton, progressed through the Devon age groups and represented the senior Devon side before joining Somerset from the Academy in 2010. The 33-year-old made his Somerset First XI debut against Pakistan in September of that year and since then has become a vital member of the squad, captaining the side to Vitality Blast glory in 2023 and 2025.
Lewis, who is Somerset’s all-time leading wicket taker in T20 cricket, was awarded his County Cap in 2015 and was named Club Captain in 2024. In total, he has scored more than 7500 runs and taken 637 wickets for the County.
A former England Under 19 Captain, Lewis was called into the England ODI squad in 2015. He was named in the England Test squad for 2019’s clash against Ireland and secured a place on England’s IT20 tour of New Zealand that winter. He has played in three ODIs and nine IT20s for his Country.
Regarding his extension, Lewis said: “There’s something genuinely special about Somerset and I wouldn’t want to be playing my cricket anywhere else. I still get a buzz when I drive through the gates every day, and I just can’t describe what it means to me to be able to lead this team. Walking out onto the field to represent the region is something that I take extremely seriously, and I’ll continue to give my all every time I set foot on the park.
“I’ve loved the responsibility of captaining this incredible group of players and hopefully we will be able to give our Members and supporters a few more trophies over the next couple of years.”
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry is pleased that Lewis will remain at the Cooper Associates County Ground. “Lewis is a leader on and off the field, and his performances as a player and a captain are consistently outstanding,” he said.
“He has the ability to positively impact games with the bat, with the ball and with his captaincy. He epitomises everything that it means to represent this Club and it is a statement of intent that players of his calibre want to be a part of what we’re looking to achieve.”
