Jason not surprised by great start to the season
After three games, Somerset sit atop Division One of the Rothesay County Championship.
One man in particular isn’t surprised by the Club’s positive start to the 2026 campaign.
Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr is delighted by how his players have performed so far.
“The nature of the three games has been very different,” he explained when we sat down with him at the Cooper Associates County Ground earlier this week. “We’ve played against three different teams on three different surfaces, but right from the first game we’ve been incredibly competitive. We’ve played some outstanding cricket and there’s been significant contributions from lots of different people.
“Through necessity and choice, we’ve changed the team and people have come in and done really well. We’ve stayed focused as a team and session by session endeavoured to deliver what we’ve needed to do in the moment.”
“Only time will tell how important a good start to the season is. I think every team sets out with great intentions and wants to start the season well. One of the things that’s pleased me most is the confidence that’s been carried over from last summer, through the winter, and into the start of this season. We’ve managed to get a couple of really positive results but for me it’s more about how we’ve played our cricket and that bodes well for us as we move forward through the summer.
“There’s always room for improvement. We’re human beings, we’re going to make mistakes. Players are always going to do some brilliant stuff and they’re going to do some stuff that makes us want to pull our hair out. For the majority so far we’ve been incredible. It’s very much a cliche, but we go out there trying to win those key moments in games and we’ve managed to do that most of the time so far this year.”
Has Jason been surprised by the start to the season?
“Not at all,” he said. “There’s so much belief in this group and a lot of what they’ve worked on through the winter is starting to transfer out into the middle. We’ve got some incredible talent; there’s no doubt about that.
“We lost Lewis for the first two games, but Craig stepped up brilliantly. He demonstrated with both bat and ball the quality that he has. Everyone is playing a part. The squad has a mix of very young players and more senior guys. We know they’re all incredibly talented, but it’s about transferring that into performance and they’re starting to do that which is exciting for the Club.”
