“It’s part of the DNA here” – Tom thriving in the One Day Cup
Somerset currently sit at the top of Group A in the 2026 Metro Bank One Day Cup.
One of the reasons for the success in the competition so far has been the form of Tom Lammonby.
he 26-year-old is currently the leading run scorer in the tournament with 260 runs at an average of 86.66.
We caught up with him at the Cooper Associates County Ground this week to discuss his productive start to the competition.
“It’s been very pleasing,” he explained. “The Metro Bank One Day Cup squad seems to get a little bit younger each year and it’s a great competition for showcasing a lot of young talent and also trying to mix that with a bit of experience. I think that’s one of the roles I’ve been trying to take up this year. I want to use that bit more experience to hopefully try and show the newer lads the ins and outs of the Metro Bank and professional cricket in general.
“I’m 26 now, so I still feel quite young, but when you look around the changing room and you’re one of the older heads, it is a strange position to be in. I think that also adds a bit of pressure on me in a good way to be accountable and set the standards for how we want to play the cricket we play. I think my role is to set the standards across all three facets. Hopefully, I’ll be able to return to bowling over the next few games and can hopefully be a bit more of an experienced head in that department as well. It’s been a positive start and I’m just very, very happy to be out there on the park playing.
Despite the volume of runs, is he frustrated that he hasn’t converted his three big scores into a century?
“Definitely! I think you always look at the what-ifs and at what you can do better. I think I’ve been pretty controlled so far and I’ve managed to keep the run rate ticking over and helped to set a big platform for us to finish off strongly with the bat. But, you know, it’s a bit frustrating getting out when you’re just about to unleash or let the reins off. I’m really wanting to complete an innings, go all the way through and try and have a big match winning score at the end of it.”
List A cricket is a format that has seen good success for the Club over the years. Is Somerset’s history within the format something that the current squad are aware of?
“I think it’s part of the DNA here,” he explained. “When you’re on the Academy, you’re aware of the great players who have come before you. Now is our turn and there’s definitely that awareness of how fruitful the competition has been for the Club in the past. Everyone is also aware of how strong a white ball team we’ve been for the last few years as well, so I think history plays a big part. It’s about taking it into our own hands now.
“The competition over the last few years has been a great stepping stone for our younger players to come into the professional game so we are aware of the history but we’re also aware of how important it is for the future as people bed into professional cricket as well.”
What does Tom put his good form so far in the competition down to?
“I think a bit of it would probably be down to hunger. I’ve had a very up and down year with injuries and not being able to perform to the level that I want, so I think a bit of it is hunger and a bit of it is fight from missing a large part of the season due to injury. I want to make up for lost time and so far that’s paying dividends. I’m just trying to do the basics for as long as possible and control impulses that sometimes get thrown around in there. I just want to help the team because being sat on the sidelines has been really frustrating.”
Does the 2026 squad have what it takes to do well in the competition?
“I think so. I definitely think we’ve got the talent, and we’ve shown over the last few games that we can beat some good teams. We know we can do it, we just need to be smart in the decisive and defining moments because that’s what will determine the outcome of games.”
Somerset’s next home match in the Metro Bank One Day Cup is on Friday August 7th when we take on Surrey.
