“It’s an opportunity to learn and get better” – Lewis Looking Forward to Canada Super 60

The English domestic cricket season is now at an end, but several of the Somerset squad are set to continue playing.

Lewis Gregory, Will Smeed, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Jake Ball will be taking part in the Canada Super 60.

The T10 competition gets underway later this week and we caught up with Lewis on Monday to discuss his participation in the tournament.

“There’s a lot of different competitions that are coming to the fore,” he said. “With that comes opportunities to play in different parts of the world and I’m really looking forward to visiting somewhere new. It’s definitely an exciting opportunity. You can always learn from people, so I’m looking forward to working with different coaches, playing with some different players, having plenty of conversations and seeing how different people go about things.

“It’s an opportunity to learn and get better. Different conditions help you to adapt your game, and you keep adapting as you play more. I’m looking forward to going out there, showing what I can do and seeing where I can take my game.”

Canada’s links to the game date back to 1844 when the country took part in the first ever international cricket match against the USA in New York. Since then, Canada has not gone on to become a powerhouse within the game, so what does Lewis hope that the Super 60 will achieve?

“Franchise cricket is about trying to get the best players in the world to different tournaments,” he explained. “Canada’s not known particularly well for its cricket and they’re trying to expand and grow the game so it’s an exciting opportunity. I’m looking forward to getting out there, experiencing a new country and hopefully playing some good cricket.

“You want the game to expand and you want more countries to come to the fore and be involved in the game that we love. The franchise world has started to do that. There’s lots of competitions popping up in different countries that aren’t renowned for cricket and hopefully that will inspire people to pick up a ball or a bat and give the game a go and hopefully fall in love with it.

“We’ve got a few of the Somerset boys going out there. I’m just about to meet a couple of them at Heathrow actually! It’ll be nice to see some familiar faces and it’s a good opportunity for the guys to get out there and show the world what they’re about.”

After another dramatic season, does Lewis have a message for the Somerset Members and supporters?

“It’s obviously been a hard-fought summer. There’s been a lot of amazing performances and there’s been a lot of positives worth celebrating.

“I believe that we’re the best-supported club in County Cricket. The Members and supporters cheer us on during the good times and the bad times and it makes our job a lot more enjoyable and easier when we’re supported how we are. Massive thanks to the people who support us. Hopefully, we’ll see you next year.”
