“It’s an absolute honour” – James on his England call up
It was announced earlier today that James Rew has been called into the England squad for the forthcoming Test match against Zimbabwe.
Following the announcement of his inclusion, we spoke to James to get his reaction to his first senior international call up.
“It’s incredible really and I’m really excited to be joining up with the squad,” he said. “It’s an absolute honour to be included in the squad. It’s an unbelievable opportunity and I’m just so happy.
“When you look back over the last couple of years, everything’s happened so fast. I’m just trying to stay grounded and take whatever opportunities that come my way.”
Did James have any idea that the call up was coming?
“Not at all. It was very unexpected and I’m still pretty surprised but very excited at the same time.
“It’s going to be a case of me enjoying my time and learning as much as I can. I’ll be trying to soak up as much knowledge and information as I can from these top players and coaches. If the opportunity to play presents itself then obviously I’ll try and take it with both hands. Whatever happens, it’s going to be an incredible experience.”
The 21-year-old has been taken aback by the messages of support that he’s received following the announcement.
“It’s been really nice to have received so many messages,” he explained. “People have been really kind and said some lovely things.”
The Rothesay Test match against Zimbabwe gets underway at Trent Bridge on May 22nd.
