“It was amazing” – Theo reflects on his Somerset debut
The next step towards achieving his dream came true for Academy youngster Theo Lamey when he made his Somerset List A debut at Kent in the Metro Bank One Day Cup recently.
The 16-year-old has played his way through the Somerset age groups and scored runs at every stage of his career and last summer he scored 213 against Glamorgan.
He has played regularly for Somerset Seconds this year and on Friday he got his First XI opportunity scoring 14 off 13 balls.
Back at the Cooper Associates County this week, Theo talked about his debut.
“It was amazing and a bit of a shock,” he said. “For a couple of days afterwards I was a bit confused and didn’t quite understand how it happened, but it was an amazing experience.
“I found out that I was going to play at the start of last week and then travelled up to Canterbury on the Thursday to play on Friday. I did well for Somerset Under 18s against Warwickshire that week as well and I got a 100 in both innings which was good.
“Playing against Kent was a whole step up for me and it’s really nice to have been rewarded like this for all the hard work over the winter and earlier this summer.”
How did Theo feel when he was waiting to bat?
“I didn’t feel any pressure really. I was more excited than nervous. However, when I was walking down the stairs to go out to the middle it actually hit me that I was going out to bat in my first professional game.
“When I went out to bat, Josh Thomas was batting and I like being out in the middle with him because he makes it look easy, so he’s nice to bat with.
“I’ve known Josh since school because we were at King’s Hall together for a bit and then at King’s College. It’s nice to share time out in the middle with someone you know.”
What lies ahead for Theo?
“I’ll be back with the squad practicing this week and then hopefully I’ll be in contention for selection for the team on Friday.”
