“Hopefully there’s a few more to come!” – Lewis looks back on 200 T20 wickets

Whatever happens in 2025, it will be a year to remember for Lewis Gregory.

Having said that, the Somerset Captain has confessed to “not really being big on stats”, so it would probably be more accurate to say that 2025 is already a year to remember for those of us who follow Somerset and love a stat.

The reason we sat down with Lewis this week was to discuss the fact that he reached an incredible landmark recently; 200 career T20 wickets.

Sam Cook was victim number 200 when he was bowled for four at Chelmsford on Sunday, with victim number one being Joe Denly back in 2011.

So how does it feel to have 200 in the wicket column?

“It’s definitely pretty cool,” he said when we spoke earlier today. “When you’re young and you start out on your career you don’t really think about how many wickets you’re going to take. You just play each game and when you’re as old as me they add up! It’s a big milestone and it’s really nice to get there. Hopefully, there’s a few more to come and hopefully we can win the trophy again this year. I genuinely couldn’t remember who number one was. Some of the lads were asking me in the dressing room and then we saw on socials that it was against Kent.”

Can Lewis believe what’s happened during his career since that day in 2011?

“You sit in the dressing room now and you still feel like one of the young ones, but you’re really not! We’re seeing the likes of Thomas Rew coming in at the age of 17 and I’m starting to very much feeling my age!

“In 14 years of playing T20 cricket for Somerset there have been some amazing moments and I can’t really comprehend what’s happened during that time. Being able to pull on that jersey over such a long period of time is really special and hopefully there will be a few more influential performances along the way.”

What does T20 cricket mean to Lewis?

“I grew up watching T20 cricket, so to be able to play for Somerset at 18 was incredible. We go into every competition wanting to win trophies and the Vitality Blast is no different. We won it in 2023 and we probably should have won it a few more times as well. I’ve been very fortunate to have tasted success for Somerset in the format and also to be able to play it all over the world. It’s given me some great moments on the field and also some great life experience as well. I’m very grateful to have been able to play the volume of cricket that I have so far and I’d like to think that there’s a lot more to come from me.”

What are some of Lewis’ standout memories of T20 cricket?

“It’s really hard to pin point just a few. Obviously, the feeling of winning the Blast in 2023 is right up there. The pride that I felt for the whole team and for all the Members and supporters that day was pretty special. We’ve had a lot of near misses over the years in the format, so to be able to lift that trophy in front of our fans and give them something back for everything they do for us is probably the biggest moment.

“The Champions League experience was amazing as well. To be able to go to India as a young player and take on those IPL teams in front of 45,000 people was insane.”

Does the current Somerset squad have what it takes to go all the way in the Vitality Blast again in 2025?

“We’ve certainly got all the ingredients. We definitely cover a lot of bases with the squad that we’ve got. We’ve shown over the last few years how consistent we are in the format and we’ve started the campaign brilliantly. We’ve got a great squad and hopefully the experiences of the last few years will be of benefit to us in those decisive moments as the tournament progresses.”

Somerset are next in Vitality Blast action at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton on Thursday June 12th when we take on Middlesex.
