Five Somerset players named in September Team of the Month

September’s MVP Teams of the Month in the men’s and women’s domestic game have been announced using the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings. This is the sixth and final iteration of the Team of the Month for the 2024 summer.

Using the MVP’s unique algorithm, the sides have been picked by choosing the game’s top performers with the bat and the ball across domestic cricket in the month of September.

The men’s game, saw the Vitality Blast, Metro Bank One Day Cup and the Vitality County Championship all play out their final rounds. September’s Team of the Month saw as many as five Somerset players feature, including Somerset wicketkeeper James Rew who retained his place in the team from August.

Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory had an outstanding month with both bat and ball, which saw him secure 170.56 MVP points. As the highest points-scorer by a considerable margin, he captains the men’s side for the first time this summer. He picked up 57.26 batting points and 77.29 bowling points over the course of the month.

Lewis and James are joined by Jack Leach, Tom Banton and Archie Vaughan.

Yorkshire’s James Wharton scored the most runs out of the selected players with 448. This included a First-Class career best score of 285 against Northamptonshire in the final round of the Vitality County Championship.

Wharton accumulated 77.78 batting points in the last 30 days. However, Durham’s David Bedingham picked up the most batting points with 84.22 points, having scored a phenomenal 279 against Lancashire.

The 2024 cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year Liam Dawson also found a place in the Team of the Month for a second-consecutive month after picking up 128.51 overall points.

In the women’s game, South East Stars batter Alice Davidson-Richards captains the September team. The 30-year-old earned 99.45 MVP points last month, thanks to her contributions in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, where she scored 332 runs from just four matches at an incredible average of 110.67.

The 2024 cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year winner Kathryn Bryce returned to the Team of the Month after three months. The Blaze all-rounder is once again joined by Sunrisers opening batter Grace Scrivens who also makes a comeback for the first time since June.

As far as bowling is concerned, Alexa Stonehouse amassed the most bowling MVP points with 30.93. She was the joint-leading wicket-taker in September along with Northern Diamonds’ Phoebe Turner with nine.

The PCA’s MVP system works by comparing a player’s accomplishments against the expected performance for that game. Runs and wickets achieved at each ground are also considered and compared to the average. This enables players to score or lose MVP points on every ball through CricViz’s extensive historical database, the rankings are a true reflection of performance.

The teams have been selected using a traditional, balanced side. This meant that Southern Vipers pacer Georgia Elwiss missed out in the team to accommodate a front-line spinner in the form of Kalea Moore.

Likewise, in the men’s game, Sussex spinner Jack Carson missed out in the team as the XI already comprised of other spinners with more MVP points, including Dawson and the Somerset spin duo of Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach.
