First Pro Contract for Kian
Somerset Academy all rounder, Kian Roberts has signed his first professional contract with the Club.
The 19-year-old, a product of the Cornwall Pathway, has signed a deal for the 2026 season.
Kian is a right-handed batter and right-arm bowler who attended Taunton School and plays his club cricket for Bridgwater CC.
In 2025, Kian featured in five Second XI County Championship matches for Somerset, scoring 202 runs at an average of 50.50 and a best of 121 not out. He also claimed eight wickets with a best of two for 22. His six Second XI T20 matches yielded 99 runs and seven wickets.
Kian’s form for the Second XI saw him named in this year’s Metro Bank One Day Cup squad and his full Somerset debut came in the competition against Lancashire at the Cooper Associates County Ground in August, followed by a further opportunity during the win at Sussex where he scored 29 and claimed his maiden First XI wicket when he dismissed Oli Carter.
After signing his contract, Kian said: “This is a very proud moment for me because this is something that I’ve always wanted. It’s a dream come true, and hopefully it’s just the start.
“Making my debut and walking out in front of a big crowd who are all on your side was almost surreal. I got a cheer when I got off the mark and I couldn’t have wished for any more than that from my debut. As a Cornish boy, it’s amazing to have the opportunity to represent the region, be a professional cricketer and play in the First Team.
“Somerset County Cricket Club means a huge amount to me. I remember coming to watch games here with my Grandad and saying to him that this is where I wanted to play cricket. Now that it’s happening, it’s difficult to put into words.
“I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me along this journey so far from coaches, family and supporters. I wouldn’t have been able to get to this point without all of your support.”
Joe Skinner, Managing Director of Cornwall Cricket added: “Kian began his cricketing journey in Cornwall and has maintained strong connections by representing the senior team over the past two seasons. We are delighted that his dedication and hard work have led him to this stage, and we look forward to following his continued development and progression in the game.”
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “We have been impressed by Kian’s application and work ethic during his time on the Academy, and his performances for the Second XI this summer earned him a place in the Metro Bank One Day Cup squad. He transitioned seamlessly into the First Team environment, and we are excited to see how he progresses over the next 12 months and beyond.”
