James Signs First Pro Contract

Academy seamer, James Theedom has signed his first professional contract with Somerset County Cricket Club.

The 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the 2027 season.

The former Exeter College student, who plays his club cricket for Sandford CC, worked his way through the Devon Pathway before joining the Somerset Academy.

James featured in a total of 13 Second XI matches across the formats this summer, claiming eight wickets and scoring a number of important lower order runs.

James was named in this season’s Metro Bank One Day Cup squad, making his First XI debut in the victory at Yorkshire, claiming his maiden wicket when he dismissed Finlay Bean. He also played in the win at Kent.

After signing his contract, James said: “I’m feeling really proud to have the chance to sign my first contract with Somerset and very proud to be another Devonian to have come through the Pathway.

“It’s been a great experience being on the Somerset Academy and I’m now ready for the next big challenge of competing for a place in the Somerset First XI squad.  I’m very grateful to be given this opportunity by the Club and I know that the hard work begins now.  My focus will be on developing my strength and my skill set over the winter and I can’t wait to put the Wyvern on again next summer.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped me get this far.  I can’t mention them all, but I’m incredibly grateful to everyone and anyone who has supported me over my career to date. I hope to repay them with some important First XI performances in 2026 and 2027.

“My experience in the Metro Bank One Day Cup this summer was so good. Making my debut, taking my first wicket, getting a win and singing Blackbird was something that I’ll never forget.”

Devon Cricket Pathway Manager, Sandy Allen added: “We’re absolutely delighted to see James earn his first professional contract with Somerset CCC. James has shown outstanding commitment, talent, and character throughout his development, and this achievement is a testament to his hard work. This is a proud moment for everyone involved in his cricketing journey, particularly his family, friends, and those of us within the Devon Cricket Performance Pathway. We wish him every success as he takes this exciting next step in his career.”

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “James has impressed across our U18 programme and the Second XI this summer, then stepped onto the First XI stage in the Metro Bank One Day Cup and embraced the challenge with real confidence. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to help him develop and work towards his full potential over the next two years.”
