Erin and Kieran reflect on great start to the season
Somerset Women have got off to a flying start in the 2026 Metro Bank One Day Cup.
The team are currently second in the table having won both of our opening fixtures.
Reflecting on the victories over Yorkshire and Lancashire, Head Coach Erin Osborne said: “Two wins from two games is a great way to start the season. As a group we’ve been playing really well, and we’ve made improvements from game one in the areas we identified as a group.
“I’m pleased with the way we’ve gone about our fielding, and I thought that the power plays with Griff up front with the ball has been exceptional and our two spinners have been as well.
“Anika Learoyd was a ripper on her debut too. She came in at a difficult situation, with the game evenly poised and she just put pressure straight back on the bowlers. She was exceptional and punished any poor deliveries, so it’s great to have her here as part of the group.”
Women’s Assistant Coach & Batting Lead, Kieran Peters added: “It’s been very different this year and one of the biggest changes has been the cultural shift in terms of how the group operates. There has been more ownership given to the group and I think we have seen some good evidence of this during the winter which has now transitioned into the summer.”
“We’re asking the players to develop and I’ve enjoyed seeing them taking more ownership of what is going on.
“The nature of the group is something that is really exciting. It’s such a young squad and over the next couple of years we are going to keep seeing big improvements as we move forward.”
Looking ahead to the next Metro Bank One Day Cup match at home against Surrey on Saturday 25th April, Erin said: “I think our two wins have come off the last 18 balls of the game so we’re playing pretty exciting cricket. I think the standard has been really good and on Saturday I’m expecting a really tight game. It would be nice to get the job done a little bit earlier, but it’s a great brand of cricket and I hope that the supporters come along and watch us.”
