Ben helping to create the stars of the future
Ben Green has spent part of the winter assisting the Somerset Pathway Coaches.
We spoke to Ben this week to discuss why he is getting involved with the potential future stars of the Club.
“It’s important to explore post-cricket careers and I’ve really enjoyed working with the Pathway over the winter,” he explained. “I’m doing my Level 3 coaching course, and I really like being able to give something back to the game. Helping people try to fulfil their potential is very rewarding. Whether that’s the long-term plan, I’m not sure but I’m enjoying it at the moment, and we’ll see where that takes me.”
What does Ben think of the current intake?
“I’ve been really impressed by what I’ve seen,” he said. “We’re certainly not short on talent at the moment! There’s a serious group of youngsters who could be knocking on the door soon and I’ll certainly be rooting for them. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on how this group progresses.”
How has Ben’s pre-season gone so far?
“It’s been great. We’ve been working really hard on our games in Taunton, and it’s been good to see the players who are abroad performing so well too. I feel like the squad is in a really good place.
“It’s important to recognise that the hard work we put in now will set us up well for the season ahead. We need to make sure that we are physically and mentally right and I feel like the training that we’ve been doing has been really purposeful and everyone is getting a lot out of it.
“Everyone seems to be pretty pleased with where their game is at and we’re progressing really well. Morale is high and we’ve got a group of players who are always looking out for each other, so we’re definitely in a good spot.”
Ben also explained that the team will be using last season’s disappointments to fuel the fire ahead of the new season.
“Everyone knows that September was a really disappointing month for us but I think a lot of the conversations around that have been positive. It was good to have been in that position in the first place and we need to keep reinforcing that. We did 95% of the season really well to be in a position to win three trophies. Obviously, it was disappointing not to get over the line.
“We’re not new to winning trophies. We won the Blast in 2023 and the One-Day Cup in 2019 and it’s reassuring that we are getting ourselves into a position to win silverware. It’s now a case of making sure that everyone is as diligent as they can be with their preparation each week and that we’re ready to go. Those experiences from last year will put us in a much better position for when we do it again. We experienced how much it hurt last year and that will drive us forward.”
What does Ben hope to achieve in 2025?
“I don’t like to really focus on personal stats, I just want to be contributing to as many wins as I can for Somerset. I’d love to be a part of the red ball team and contribute to wins in that. I also want to be an integral part of the white ball sides.”
