Ben relishing topping the tables
It’s been a whirlwind few years for Ben Green.
Since making his Somerset debut in 2016, he has established himself as a vital element of the squad across all three formats, received numerous plaudits and accolades, and captained the side in 50-over cricket.
He is currently the leading wicket taker in the 2023 Vitality Blast, and tonight he returns to the scene of where his First XI journey began.
Somerset will be looking to maintain their 100% start to this year’s T20 competition when they take on Hampshire Hawks at the Ageas Bowl, which is where the 25-year-old made his First Team debut seven years ago.
The all rounder has 14 Blast wickets so far this season and is building on his performances last summer when he was Somerset’s leading wicket taker in the competition.
What does Ben put his recent success down to?
“I suppose I’m trying to pick the right deliveries at the right time a little bit more,” he said when we spoke to him after the victory over Essex on Sunday. “I took a bit of learning from last year when I bowled quite a lot and I’m continuing to try to develop that and be smarter. At the end of the day, I suppose it’s not so much about how fast you are, it’s about making the right decisions.
“As a group I think that we are incredibly together and the confidence we took from winning the first five games made us confident that we could defend the situation against Essex. We’ve got an incredible mix of talent and experience in the squad. In the bowling attack we’ve got three Test Match bowlers plus Roleof and Lewis, who’ve played a shed load of T20s. I can also lob a few up now and then, so we’re going well.
“We are taking every game as it comes and the momentum is with us. We’re all thoroughly enjoying our cricket at the moment, and the boys are really together in the changing room.”
