Archie looks back on maiden Somerset century
There was no hiding the delight on Archie Vaughan’s face when he walked off the pitch after scoring his maiden century for Somerset.
His innings helped his side to an eight-wicket victory over Northants Steelbacks which secured Somerset a place in the knock out stages of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
The 19-year-old made 109 not out off 122 balls with 13 fours during which he shared an opening partnership with Tom Lammonby of 168.
Ahead of Somerset’s play off clash against local rivals Gloucestershire, Archie said: “It means a huge amount to me to score my first century for Somerset here in Taunton in front of a home crowd. I know just how much we love cricket down here, so its great to be able to put on a show. Hopefully this is the first of many.”
Archie was one of the 11 former or current Academy players who defeated Sussex at Hove on Friday about which he said: “We’ve spent a lot of time playing together in the Seconds and on the Academy, so when we beat sides like Northants and Sussex it’s such a great feeling. We also have the experience of the likes of Jake Ball and Ben Green to help us. It’s great to see this group of young players doing so well.
“The Academy here does such a good job. It produces so many good players which is credit to all of the Academy and Pathway coaches. It always seems like we’ve got good young players coming through the system, and long may that continue.”
Looking to the future, Archie said: “I’m looking to get out to Australia this winter and play some club cricket. I’ll keep on bowling and hit a lot of balls and play some good competitive cricket out there. Before then we’ve reached the knock out stages in this comp and hopefully we can get a bit of silverware, but we just have to see how it goes and take every game as it comes.”
