Amelie’s Australian Q&A
Somerset’s Amelie Munday is currently in Australia.
The 22-year-old all-rounder, who signed a one-year rookie contract recently, is spending the winter Down Under working hard on her game.
We caught up with the former University of Exeter student earlier this week for a quick fire Q&A about her time away:
Where are you playing?
I am playing in Geelong just outside of Melbourne for Geelong Cricket Club.
Why did you choose to go abroad rather than to stay at home?
A large gap in my game is game awareness, so coming out to Australia to play as much as I can has allowed me to improve on this.
How has it been going out there?
It’s been an amazing experience. We’ve had some big breakthroughs with the bat, leading to three 70s in the last four weeks.
What has been your favourite moment so far?
I’ve been very lucky to go and experience life on a sheep farm. The people I live with have taken me out and shown me their way of life between the mountains, and it is incredible!
How important is playing overseas during the winter when it comes to your development on and off the field?
It’s hugely important for me. I think I’ve developed more than I ever could in the nets.
Have you had a chance to explore much of the country and do things outside of cricket?
Yes! I’m super lucky to have travelled down the Great Ocean Road, experience the sheep farm, and I’m currently on the Sunshine Coast exploring a bit more.
As an English player in Australia do you get a bit of stick ahead of an Ashes series?
I haven’t had too much. You get the odd comment but I mostly take it on the chin and get my head down to focus on the game.
Have you heard from any of your new Somerset teammates?
Yes, I’ve been chatting to a couple of the girls and it sounds like they’re loving it.
Have the coaches and physios been in contact to make sure that you’re keeping yourself fit?
I’ve had lots of positive conversations with the coaches back home. It’s a perfect balance at the moment of catch ups while allowing me to get on with the work I need to do out here on my game.
Are you looking forward to heading back?
I can’t wait to get back and jump into training. It will definitely be nice to have a mini winter before we head back into the summer ahead of us.
What are you hoping to achieve in your first year as a pro?
I want to be the best cricketer I can be for Somerset, and hopefully debuting for the team to aid as many wins as possible.
