Alex Griffiths joins Somerset
Somerset County Cricket Club can today announce the signing of all-rounder, Alex Griffiths.
The 22-year-old from Swansea has put pen to paper on an initial two-year contract.
Alex progressed through the Welsh youth system and was also part of the England Development Programme.
The right-hander then joined the Western Storm Pathway and was a part of the South West Regional Development Centre before being named as a member of the team’s training squad in 2018.
Her full debut came in the 2019 Kia Super League clash with Loughborough Lightning. She went on to feature in four further matches in the tournament that summer as Storm lifted the trophy.
Alex signed her first professional contract the following year.
Her 41 List A matches for Western Storm yielded 694 runs, with a best of 80, and 24 wickets. She also featured in 30 T20s for Storm, scoring more than 170 runs and claiming 10 wickets.
Alex has also featured in The Hundred representing Welsh Fire.
After signing for Somerset, Alex said: “This means a great deal to me. Although I’ve been a professional for a few years now, it’s exciting to be at the start of something new with Somerset.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing how the new tier system will work and it’s certainly going to keep women’s cricket traveling in the right direction.
“It’s great to be aligned with the men’s team and it’s a really exciting time. Hopefully, we can inspire young boys and girls across the South West to get involved in the game.”
Somerset Women Head Coach, Trevor Griffin is pleased to have secured the services of a player with Alex’s experience. “Alex was one of the first players within the South West to sign a professional contract for Western Storm and I’m delighted she has now signed with us at Somerset,” he explained. “She is one of the best fielders in the country and a genuine all-rounder who can influence games in different ways.
“Her experience will be important in what is a young squad and I’m excited to see Alex progress in this new era.”
Somerset CCC Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry added: “Alex has a good deal of top-level experience under her belt, and she possesses the attributes to impact games with the bat, the ball and in the field.
“Her experience and abilities will prove hugely valuable to Somerset CCC moving forward.”
