Abu Dhabi T20 Super Cup Preview

Somerset are back in competitive action this week when the Club compete in the Abu Dhabi T20 Super Cup.

As part of our pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi we will take part in the competition which also includes the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA), Nottinghamshire CCC, Essex CCC, Yorkshire CCC and Warwickshire CCC.

Somerset will face SACA at 6:30am on Friday before taking on Nottinghamshire at 2:30pm on Saturday.

A third match will then take place on Sunday against opposition who will be decided by other results within the competition.

Somerset arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier this week and Head Coach, Jason Kerr is pleased with how the trip is going.

“It’s been outstanding so far and we’ve had our first full training session,” he explained. “We had three hours in the nets and the lads are in really good spirits. I certainly feel that we got the most out of that time.

“This is the players first opportunity to see the growth that they’ve made over the winter and to put that into practice. We’re looking forward to the T20 competition over here but the results won’t necessarily be the most important thing. At this stage it’s about creating opportunities to make sure that the players are match sharp and ready for when they get back to the UK.

“It’s important that people are given the opportunity and nothing is set in stone selection-wise ahead of our first game of the season against Worcestershire. We will see some players in familiar roles this week because we will be doing everything that we can to be ready for that first game.

“There will be some familiar faces in the SACA side. There are some players who have come out of the county game and are looking for a way back in. They will be hungry and looking to showcase their skills because this is an opportunity for them to impress. We certainly won’t be taking the game lightly.”

Somerset will also be playing a two-day red ball fixture against Yorkshire beginning on Friday March 21st, about which Jason said: “Although we are starting with some T20 games, all of our practice is focusing on red ball cricket and we have a few days of competitive cricket against Yorkshire. The white ball season is still a long way off and we need to make sure that the squad are ready for Worcestershire in early April.

“I want the guys to be working towards that first red ball game. That has to be the primary focus because momentum is huge in sport.”
