5 moments you might have missed

2023 was another exciting season for Somerset CCC, the highlight of which was the Vitality Blast triumph at Edgbaston.

However, throughout all the excitement and drama there were a number of key moments, vital performances or personal milestones that you might have missed.

We’ve taken a look back through the season’s archives to highlight a few of these key moments.

What were your key moments of 2023? let us know via our social media channels!

1 – Kasey’s Catch

Having set Essex Eagles a total of 146 to win the 2023 Vitality Blast, the team from Chelmsford had raced to 27 off 1.5 overs.

The last ball of the second over saw Adam Rossington smash Matt Henry at cover point where Kasey Aldridge took an absolutely sensational catch. The ball was going like a rocket but Kasey held on to it brilliantly. The Eagles’ momentum was halted, the course of the game altered and the rest is history!

2 – Andy’s Three-for

We all know about Andy Umeed’s heroics with the bat for Somerset in this year’s Metro Bank One Day Cup, but he also came within a whisker of winning a game for Somerset with the ball too.

Having contributed 116 runs to his side’s total of 298 for seven against Glamorgan at the Cooper Associates County Ground in August, Andy was thrown the ball when Somerset were struggling.

Having slipped to 13 for two in their run chase, the visitors had recovered to 249 for three, needing just 50 more runs with more than 15 overs still in hand. Andy bowled Eddie Byrom and claimed two wickets in the 43rd over as the home side fought back valiantly, but Andy’s impressive performance with bat and ball were ultimately in vain as Glamorgan crept over the line by two wickets.

3 – Shoaib Bashes Hampshire

Somerset’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Hampshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground in July will quite rightly be remembered for James Rew’s sublime double century, but there were a number of outstanding cameos, not least when Shoaib Bashir joined James in the middle. The pair added 108 from just 98 balls with Shoaib finishing unbeaten on 44 as Somerset posted a total of 500 in the first innings.

4 – Tom’s Tenacity

Throughout his career, Tom Abell has show a never-say-die attitude.

This was demonstrated once again during our 15-run Vitality Blast victory over Kent Spitfires at Taunton this summer.

The Club Captain chased a ball that was speeding to boundary. It seemed a lost cause to everyone except Tom. His incredible athleticism prevented what appeared to be a certain four and helped Somerset to secure a narrow 15-run victory.

5 – Kasey’s Maiden Hundred

Somerset’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford ended in stalemate this year. Despite the result, James Rew once again impressed by claiming a century in each innings. However, it was another young Somerset player who achieved an important landmark in the fixture.

Kasey Aldridge claimed his maiden First Class century on the final day of the match, sharing in an unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 192 with James.
