When the World Cup Came to Taunton: Part Two
With the ICC Women’s World Cup set to get underway this week, we thought we’d take a look back to when the tournament was held in England in 2017.
During that never-to-be-forgotten competition, Taunton hosted seven matches.
Here is part two of: When the World Cup came to Taunton.
New Zealand v Pakistan
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, but that was about as good as it got for them on the day.
Sana Mir made 50 but no other batter reached the 20-mark as Pakistan were dismissed for 144 from 46.5 overs.
Hannah Rowe was the pick of the New Zealand attack, claiming three for 22.
Despite losing Rachel Priest with just 12 runs on the board, the White Ferns eased to their target from just 15 overs thanks to a stunning 93 from just 41 deliveries by Sophie Devine.
Her innings included seven fours and nine sixes as New Zealand won by eight wickets.
South Africa v Sri Lanka
Despite winning the toss, Sri Lanka were comprehensively swept aside by South Africa.
The Proteas eased to a comprehensive eight-wicket win thanks to a Captain’s performance from Dane van Niekerk.
The South Africa skipper claimed four for 24 from eight overs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 101 inside 41 overs.
The run chase got off to a tricky start as South Africa slipped to 26 for two but Laura Wolvaardt (48 not out) and Mignon du Preez (38 not out) saw their side home with 26.5 overs to spare.
Australia v South Africa
It was Australia who came out on top in this battle of the big guns.
An outstanding all round performance from Ellyse Perry was the difference between the sides.
After winning the toss, Rachael Haynes elected to bat first.
Nicole Bolton (79) and Beth Mooney (53) shared an opening stand of 114 before South Africa battled back to claim a number of quick wickets.
However, Perry hit 55 from 58 balls as her side posted a total of 269 from 48.3 overs. Sune Luus was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five for 67.
Laura Wolvaardt (71) gave the South African run chase impetus at the top of the innings, but wickets fell at regular intervals.
Perry took two wickets and secured a run out as South Africa were all out for 210 from their 50 overs to give Australia the victory by 59 runs.
That concludes our look at When the World Cup came to Taunton.
2017 was an incredible year for England Women, hopefully 2025 will bring more of the same!
