When the World Cup came to Taunton: Part One

With the ICC Women’s World Cup set to get underway next week, we thought we’d take a look back to when the tournament was held in England in 2017.

During that never-to-be-forgotten competition, Taunton hosted seven matches.

Over the next two days, we will be remembering when the World Cup came to Taunton.

Australia v West Indies

West Indies Captain, Stafanie Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first.

Hayley Matthews top scored with 46 whilst Taylor made 45 as the West Indies were dismissed for 204 from 47.5 overs.

Ellyse Perry was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 47.

Beth Mooney and Nicole Bolton shared an opening stand of 171 to break the back of the run chase.

Mooney fell for 70 but Bolton went on to make an unbeaten 107 from just 116 balls as Australia sealed a comprehensive eight-wicket victory with 71 balls to spare.

India v West Indies

The West Indies were once again undone by a batting masterclass. This time from Smriti Mandhana.

After being invited to bat, the West Indies posted a total of 183 for eight from their 50 overs. Matthews again top scored with 43.

India lost Panum Raut to the fifth ball of the innings with no score on the board, and when Deepti Sharma fell in the eighth over the score was 33 for two.

However, Mandhana and Mithali Raj (46) shared a third wicket stand of 108 to get the innings back on track.

Mandhana finished on 106 not out from 108 balls as India claimed the win by seven wickets with 45 balls to spare.

England v Sri Lanka

After winning the toss and batting first, Sri Lanka were restricted to 204 for eight from their 50 overs, thanks in no small part to Laura Marsh who claimed four for 45 from her 10 overs.

Needing 205 for victory, England slipped to 50 for two.

However, Heather Knight (82) and Sarah Taylor (74 not out) shared a third wicket partnership of 148 as England cruised to their target with almost 20 overs remaining.

New Zealand v West Indies

The West Indies disappointing tournament continued when they faced New Zealand at Taunton, with the White Ferns coming out on top by eight wickets.

Suzie Bates won the toss and elected to field.

Leigh Kasperek claimed superb figures of three for 17 from 10 overs as the West Indies were dismissed for 150 from 43 overs.

New Zealand raced to victory from just 18.2 overs.

Rachel Priest smashed her way to 90 from just 55 balls whilst Bates hit and unbeaten 40 from 43 deliveries to see her side over the line.

Part two of When the World Cup Came to Taunton will be published tomorrow.
